Subject: Modifying undersized road bike to be more comfortable??

I have my first triathlon coming up in September and I had to find a bike and I didn't want to spend a lot of money until I know whether or not I will continue with triathlons.

I am a very big and tall guy at 6'6" so I knew I was going to have trouble finding a used bike in my size.....and ended up buy a used 56 cm Trek 1400 from a guy off this site.....I knew that was going to be too small but was hoping that it would be good enough to get me through this first race or until I could come across another used bike that would fit me better.

I road the bike this weekend and I can tell its not the height of the bike that is going to bother me....its the distance between the seat and the handlebars. I feel like the handlebars are way too close to me and I am putting a lot of force on my hands and wrists.....which is making it very painful to ride.

I was hoping that you guys may have some suggestions for modifications that I could do to make the bike a little more comfortable....nothing too expensive since I will be selling it again at some point when I find a bike that is bigger.

I am going to go get some good gel gloves today and hopefully that will help....I also saw where some bikes had what I think are called aero bars that attached on top of the existing handlebars....I thought these might help since I would be putting all the weight on my forearms instead of my wrists??

Any advice??

Tweaks that you might consider include:

Longer stem*
Sliding the saddle back on the seat rails
Raising the handlebars (since you probably have the seat as high as possible)

Aerobars, particularly if you can find some with a lot of adjustments can make you more comfortable, just be careful that the very forward position* might make the bike handling "twitchy"  and unstable.

Keep in mind that if the bike is significantly too small, you are probably also dealing with cranks that are too short.  Raising the handlebars can give you a slightly less aggressive posture which may be significantly more comfortable.

how long is your stem and what is the diameter of your handlebars. i have a new fsa stem.
120mm with a 31.8 clamp. slight rise. let me know you can have it if you cover shipping.

6'6" on a 56cm Trek?! No wonder you're not comfortable! A 56cm Trek would be from someone just under 6'... Seriously, I don't know if you could make that fit even close to what you need... You could get a 140mm stem (anything much longer is difficult to find), but even with that, I doubt you can get comfortable.

For this reason exactly, it makes so much sense to spend the money on a bike fit before buying a bike... You now have a bike that will not do you any favors and that you most likely will sell shortly to buy one that actually fits... not really saving the money you were hoping for in the first place... Or even worse, you end up hating riding because of all the aches and pains that you stop riding all together...

I am 6'5" and am on a 58" tri bike.  Longer stem and raise the seat.  I changed my cockpit recently so I too have an old 130mm stem laying around that you can have for the cost of shipping if you want it but it has the 26.0 clamp diameter, also it does have some rise to it which would help if it fits your bars.
