Are tri shoes just easier to get in and out of? Any other trade offs?
Also, anyone bought shoes online? What's the process if they don't fit? Is it a huge hassle exchanging? I'm annoyed by the LBS's who don't seem to have much selection or my size.

Couple things:
Tri shoes have the loop on the back for the rubberband to keep your shoes level when on the clips. Tri shoes only have 1 (or only need to use) strap, thus easier to get in and out The velco strap goes outside instead of inside so it doesnt get caught up in the gears if you take your shoes off while on the bike.
