Subject: Tri training and pregnancy...
Hi folks,

First pregnancy. Trying to figure out what I can and can't do. Not comfortable out on the road cycling because of the danger of a crash. Running is pretty awkward because of the added baby poundage. But that definitely leaves swimming, and I'm aching to get in the pool.

Question, though, is where the heck do I find a suit that I can use for real swimming while preggers? The stores are carrying these fufu suits that I can't even bring myself to try on. Or is there another solution that I'm missing? My body has changed enough already that I can't wear my other suits. Gotta get something new.

Also, what kind of swimming did you (or your SO) do during pregnancy? I have a tendency to be a bit intense, and I've got to reel it in a bit to make sure all is good with the bean growing and all, but I'm looking for some personal experience from other folks. My doc has cleared me to swim, but I really don't think he quite gets what tri training is all about, so I need some anecdotal information to give me a gauge. (I'm a strong swimmer--1:06 Ironman swim time...). Want to be clear that I'm not looking to tri train through this...just swimming for a reasonable bit of fitness.

Thanks, friends, for your help.

Kim

Swimming felt great when I was pregnant, about the only thing I felt comfortable doing.  I just bought a couple of speedos on clearance in a couple of progressive sizes up. I still didn't quite fill the top but it wasn't too bad.  They were some of the ugliest suits I have ever had, but did the trick.

The extra weight threw my balance on the water off, but still felt great to get the weight off my joints.

A friend of mine had her husband re-configure her mountain bike and put her in a really upright position.  She would go out and cruise on a greenway until about 6 months or so. I was worried about crashing as well, so I didn't ride.

I also waled around the neighborhood and lived vicariously through my husband's training a little.

Good luck satisfying your need to be active and with the pregnancy.

I could never bring myself to wear a pg bathing suit... It brought me to tears just looking at one, and once my belly outgrew even my most stretched out suits I put swimming on the back burner... But that was just me - I was a pretty hormonal, sensitive pg person!

Do you have a trainer, or did you always ride outside? I, too, was afraid of falling - I figured it just wasn't worth the risk. But I did ride my bike on the trainer and went to spin class until my knees started bumping my belly. It gave me something different to do rather than just waddle around the block.

Yeah a trainer is a good idea...less likely to crash unless you are really uncoordinated...but in all seriousness you are probably more likely to get in a car accident than you are when you go on a bike ride (assuming you drive everyday)...swimming would be great as well, can't help you with the suit (google it?)...good luck!

Discover a lake! or water running.. I have seen many pregnany ladies in my aquafitness class who have really enjoyed wearing a floatation belt and doing running like motions in the pool...

additionally... depending upon what stage you're at... get yourself a great pilates pregnancy video that can help you to keep and prepare your core strength for labour and afterwards.. there are some great resources out there.

I'm going to be down this road sometime next year...:-)

Some great ideas here. I actually took my tri bike out for a spin (2 miles) last night because I'm trying to sell it and wanted to run through the gears, and it was just awkward! I have a road bike that I can throw on the trainer this winter. Even under the best of circumstances, it takes a lot to get me on the trainer, though. So we went out and bought a beach cruiser...what a trip! But at least I sit upright on it, and it forces me to go a bit slower. (You can take the girl out of the triathlon, but you can' t take the triathlon out of the girl...) I've been walking every day (and living vicariously through all the people on this board and friends' training).

Swimming seems so much more appealing, and the school system I am working for is about to open a brand new pool. I'll pull out some of my old suits and see if they fit, but I was thinking I'd like to have something with a little more support.

This is the best thing someone has sent me a link to so far:

Thanks, guys!

I have 5 kiddos and exercised throughout though I wasn't doing tri's back then.  I did swim a little.  I continued to do everything I had already been doing - spin, versa climber, stairmaster, weights etc.  Pilates and yoga are also great and abdominal exercises are very good for you during pregnancy - this is a great time to focus on your core.  I didn't gain much in my pregnancies, had big babies and pushed them all out in 10 minutes or less - those ab muscles really came in handy.

I hadn't started tri training when I was preggo with either of my kids, so I didn't swim at all.  Although, I wish I had been swimming...so much easier on the joints with the extra pounds and no worries about falling like with running and biking!

My Ob/Gyn told me to use my HR as a guideline when working out and stay below 140 bpm.  You might work to follow that guideline in the pool as well.  By my 6th month of pregnancy, I was hitting 140 pretty quickly while running and had to "power" walk for the rest of the time.  Boring!

Congrats to you!!!

Ditto on the Stretched out and progressively larger swim suits (Speedo, Tyr...).  I could not bring myslef to get a maternity swim suit.  I also found that using a belly band helped tremendously on jogging and shuffling (my attempt at running pregnant).  It helped support the growing belly and made things much more comfortable and reduced the bouncing on the baby.  I did the trainer for a while but eventually it got both boring and uncomfortable (I was too scared to go out on the roads after about 5 months).

I mostly wore bikinis to swim 1st pregnancy.  the belly just popped out between the pieces   I also had a maternity one-piece, Old Navy maybe?  That was a very simple suit, navy, no fluff and frills.

I wasn't tri-ing then.  I walked a couple miles everyday though, just made my loops closer to home the last month and my DH forbade hiking hills (on slippery muddy trails).

Enjoy!

I would work out as hard as you feel comfortable. Your body is going to protect your baby.  Plus, if you are planning a natural delivery then the continued mental power of good workouts will make labor/delivery a breeze. I have three daughters and was up and about hours after I had them...despite no tri training then I was still active-lots of running.  My last baby was born in the water- I had her in less than two hours with only one push!  I think being fit certainly aids in speedy recovery!  When my daughter was just five hours old we were on our way to IHOP because I was craving pancakes-no kidding!!!

Also, I think bikinis are beaufiful on pregnant women!  I wore a bikini when I was pregnant...nothing real skimpy but it felt much better than some of the crazy swimsuit alternatives.  Also, Shade clothing company (on-line and in select stores) makes awesome clothes...including maternity!  They might not seem like anything special but they are cut longer so you don't feel like you are tugging down your shirt...I literally own about fifty bc I stock up when they are on sale...I think they maternity swim suits as well...

I am recently pregnant also but it is my 3rd pregnancy, not first.  I am 9 weeks and have found I get incredibly dizzy on the bike so that is out for now.  I can still run fairly well and swimming of course is great!  For now I fit in my regualr swimsuit but I do have a maternity suit when I need it.  My OB was fine with me doing everything I have been doing as long as I am safe.  If you fell good, I say do whatever you want.  The old restrictions about HR are no longer being followed by most OBs so I say do what makes you feel best!!  Good luck!
