I'm unable to run for at least a week with seasmoiditis but would like to planning my return week. Assuming I'm good to go next Monday how many miles should I start back up with and how slow should I ramp up the distance. I average 18-22 miles per week right now. Obviously I won't run if it still hurts, but I don't want to be too timid either. Should I avoid the long run (10 miles) for a couple of weeks and do more medium runs? I have untill the beginning of October before my HIM so I have time to get my run volume back up if needed. Thanks....Jason

Have you seen a doctor?  If so, do what the doctor says.  If not, I would ease back into things for the first week or so.  If you have until October, there is no reason to push yourself immediately.  Test it our for a mile or two a couple times this week, then next week add another mile or two.  Mix in some aquajogging.  If you still feel fine in two weeks, let 'er rip.

x2.  And if not, you might consider it.

As for running with pain -- there's pain, and then there's pain.  I started running (for the first time seriously in my life) after a knee operation.  There was no such thing as running without pain.  But then again, the PT post-surgery was more painful than anything I've experienced running.  I spent a lot of time talking to my doctor about how to learn to tell the difference between pain that is a sign to slow down, and pain that is a normal part of recovery.  I think this is an important distinction to learn -- if you stop every time you feel pain, you're going to be stopping a lot, especially as you get older.  Just my opinion.

Thanks for the advice. I did see a podiatrist and his advice was to start back running once I stopped limping. I wasn't to impressed with him and did not ask for more detail so I'm going at this solo. I would prefer to not have to go see another doctor hence me asking for advice based on people’s previous experiences. A 2-week ramp up back to full volume seems reasonable so I'll probably give that a try and see how it goes. I am also planning on slowing the pace some and leaving out any hills. Thanks...Jason

Well, we aren't Dr.'s and we can only tell you how we might have handled the situation.

I took 6 weeks off for a stress fracture (taking a week off ain't nothing honey ). When I started running again, I just slowly ramped up to what felt good. Now, mind you, I got the stress fracture at a marathon, so I was in pretty decent shape running wise when I got injured (although I did a walk/run 3/2).

So, I just did what felt right. 2 miles here, 3 miles there... I started running again mid-June and logged 16.5 miles. For July I have logged 43 miles. According to "ramping up your running rules" I have obviously NOT followed them. But everything feels good and I'm running faster and better than I have in my entire life!

Take your week off... enjoy the down time and then ramp up to where you were. Taking a week off doesn't mean you need to start from square 1 with the miles... just like taking 6 weeks off didn't mean that for me.
