After  years, I finally did my first "real" group ride. The group I was in were much slower riders than I. I didn't want to burn them. It was nice to get to meet new people, but I felt like I was on a Sunday morning drive. I tried using lower gears, but that just made me go a bit faster. Any other tips to give myself a better workout in case this happens (which I'm sure it will) again?

What I do before a group ride is try to do a VERY hard ride the day before so on the group ride it's basically an active rest day. In cycling, active recovery is very good for you and many top cyclists think it's much better than a pure rest day.

Another thing I'll do sometimes is a short but extremely hard, time trial type effort ride a few hours before the group ride and then my fatigued condition will help me match the fitness/ability of the other riders better.

Call it taking a walk on the bike.  Like the above poster said use it as an active recovery day.   And enjoy the company and scenery.  Your body will thank you.

Just enjoy the company. Make sure you adjust your training plan so you have a tough ride, or even better a brick, the day before. You will notice that the recovery ride will do wonders. Plus, over time, you will probably have smaller parts of that group do breakaways and then regroup. Lots of fun!

Well, you could look for a group ride that challenges you more?

I have a cycling club that I belong to... and I know what rides are a casual pace and which ones are b@lls to the wall.

Now that I'm in the thick of HIM training, I can't spend a ride cruising around on my bike. I can do that in off-season... but not while I'm in the middle of my season.

Maybe you can see if they have a faster group you can go ride with? If you don't want to ride faster... then ride along casually and chat with people.

good idea on using it more as recovery.

Yeah, the fast group did the 50 miles and I just didn't have time for that...
