Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i was serious about going for an oly on 9/13, but i looked at my pool calendar and saw this morning that it is going to be closed the last 2 weeks in august, but reopening again beginning of september. i find that a little uncomfortable with only 2 weeks to get my swim arms under me again. i freaked out a little bit at the sprint race i did at the same location in the open water, and dont want to magnify that in an oly distance. keep in mind, this is my first oly, but i've done 2 sprints already, and have a 3rd to complete on 8/15. and do my logs look like i should be capable of completing an oly in ~6 weeks? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Is there not another pool that you could go to while the current one is closed? Over six weeks you should be able to build to the distance. What have your longest s/b/r's been during training? |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm looking to do an Oly that same day. Only sprints for me thus far as well. I think you can definitely complete it. Compete? Dunno. As far as the pool, is there anywhere else you can swim during that 2 weeks?? Maybe a good time for some open water practice. If you could get 2 swims a week, somewhere, anywhere, you'll maintain what you've got at least. As far as your logs, you're a definitely light on hours/miles compared to most plans for an Oly, but then again, so am I. Looks particulary light on the running, less than 10 miles per week on average. I'd start adding in a long run per week and move that up toward 8-10 miles slowly by adding one mile per week. I was averaging about 15 mpw and the advice I got on these boards was to slowly increase to 20-25. |

Over six weeks you should be able to build to the distance. What have your longest s/b/r's been during training? my longest swims were back before june when i could swim for 45 minutes or more, and i would swim a mile. but the pool is at a high school, and when school is out, they change the schedule to later in the morning and instead of being able to swim 45 minutes 2x/week, im down to ~30 minutes 3x/week. i think at the amount i am training at right now in the pool, im just barely capable of an oly distance swim, but would be a different story if i could get in those longer swim times like i was getting back before june. i could maybe find another pool during that time, i dont know how local "y"s might accomodate a short term swimmer just coming to use the facility for 2 weeks. so my longest swims were no longer than 45 minutes, but that was 3 months ago. my longest bike times are an hour on the trainer, or an hour on the road. but i finish with strong bike times in sprints. my longest run was a 5 miler at 44 minutes 2 weeks ago. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How do you feel at the end of a half-hour swim? Are your arms pretty well shot, or are you more constrained by the pool hours? What would be your race strategy if you only have two weeks in the pool prior to the race? You can surely develop a race strategy that minimizes the impact of 2 weeks without swimming. As others have asked, any chance of finding another pool/lake for a couple of swims? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow I don't want to hijack but I have the same question!!! I have 2 sprints under my belt - and I have a third (XTERRA PORTLAND - WOOOOT) on the 15th - and I think I am about in the same position as the op. I have my first oly at the end of August - I haven't been using my logs consistantly but from what I have entered does it seem possible that I will survive? To the op: WE CAN DO IT!!!! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you've done hour rides on the road and can do a 5 mile run you should be able to build the distances safely in six weeks. Just using the 10% rule you could be at just over an hour and a half bike and a 7+ mile run before a short taper for the race. Just be consistent in your training and you should be abel to complete it. If you can get in at the Y definitely do that if you're worried about the swim portion. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you believe you can do it, you can do it. Even if you don't swim for a few weeks before, if you get on that starting line with no doubt that you will finish, then you will be fine. I'm currently injured, overuse (stupid me), going on 6 weeks, and am doing IM Hawaii in October, and haven't been running or biking much AT ALL (like legit some weeks zero), and I am not worried because I know I can finish, although it probably won't be a PR. I know a lot of people might be scoffing at what I just wrote but there is magic power in the power of positive thinking! If you really want to do the race nothing should stand in your way ![]() |
