Subject: How to use Map My Ride?
I see map my ride all the time, but never took the time to use it myself.   However, now that i'm here in Parker, i'd like to learn how to use it so i can have some bike routes.

When i pull up a route, what do i do then?   Do i just zoom in and look at where the route starts and ends and go from there?   How do i specifically know the route when i'm out riding?   I have a Garmin 305, i know you can import routes into the Garmin.   But how does it work?

Can someone just give me a basic crash course to get me started.

If you check out the Routes feature here on BT, you can zero in on posted rides in proximity to your zip code.  I'm pretty sure you'll get some good local routes that way.  Also look at Douglas County's Parks and Trails page, lots of good resources there too.

Oh.  I've got a 405, but imagine they all work similarly.

On mapmyride, click the 2nd tab "Map new ride"; on the map page, click "New Route->Import Route"; at the pop-up, choose "I would like to import from Garmin Device"

On BT, all you have to do is click on the Routes button, click "Create a Route" then Upload from: Garmin Device"

There's a "How to upload by Garmin" instruction page there as well. Either way you'll need  the garmin communicator software which is linked on the instruction page.

The only thing it can't do that I know of is download routes onto the watch as a guide, you have to print a route to do that.

so once you've done that....then what?

for example, i'm new to Colorado and know little to nothing about the area.   when i upload routes, how does it work with the Garmin?    if i upload a route that has several turns and areas along the ride i've never been before, how do i not get lost or know where i'm going?

what is the advantage of using this compared to say just reading a map and knowing where to bike?   i guess i don't understand how this works i guess.

Can't help you with Map My Ride since they charge to print a map so I don't use it.

However, another suggestion for good maps is teamevergreen.org.  Their maps are detailed and show elevation.  You'll probably want a google map of the same area since you don't know the roads very well yet.
