Subject: how do you come back from a long break in training (running)
I'm a first year novice runner/triathlete.  I need to find out how to bring my running back after taking a month+ off.  I tried to come back too fast and have hurt my knee.  The pain was only 3 out of 10 but runner friends said better sooner to the dr. than later, rather than HTFU.  I've seen a sports dr. and am dealing with those questions in the injury forum.  I may be needing to switch to elliptical/water running for a couple of months.  I have about 135-150 miles on my shoes:

I know how to adjust my swimming and cycling.  Running is the main issue.  How do you figure out how far/long to run after a big break in training?  How far back do I dial the clock?  If I move off the roads and onto an elliptical, can I be more agressive than I would with a treadmill or asphalt?  Use the same times/speeds?  How does the 10% rule apply when you take a month or two off?  Is it realistic to train all or mostly on elliptical and save running for races?  If you have a specific BT training plan for running to suggest, that would be MOST appreciated.

Background:  I've been running on asphalt, 1/2 on each side of the road so the camber at the edge of the road doesn't screw me up.

Looking at my training logs I can see what happened.  I trained consistently Jan-May starting from zip and built up to comfortable 90minute/7.8miles per week.  But in June and start of July, I dropped training hugely.  Week by week, I ran only 35'/3mi, 0/0mi, 28'/2.6mi, 35'/3mi, 0/0mi.  Then in late July I jumped back in.  I jumped ahead a few weeks in the training plan I'm using and did 61'/5miles, 156'/13.5mi, and 67'/7mi.  My knee started aching after the first run and I just kept going.  I hurt a little more/longer with each run and then it killed me during and post race this week.  Still the pain was only a 4-5 out of 10 max...   Cycling and swimming cause no pain.

Someone sent me this link (I'm coming back to running after 2 months off). Its run-specific (Pfitz is a running Guru!) but a good example of how to come back slowly:

hope that helps. Also maybe switch one of your runs to a track/trail/treadmill for less impact.

I started running again in the beginning of this year after a long injury and I knew I had to be very patient and build up my running mileages very slowly.

I started out with run/walks for 6 weeks (building up from running 1min and walking 1 min, up to running 5min and walking 1 min)

After that I ran the whole distances but started very easy with 6 miles a week and increased it never more than 10% each week. I am up to Half-Marathon distance now and pain free!

Have you had your walk analysed if you are wearing the right shoes? I have been using "shoe lifts" (not sure if that is the right word) and it has helped me a lot as well.

Using a run-walk method to get back up to speed has always worked for me.

I stopped running last november.  Due to work conditions and life I did not have surgery until April of this year.  I started running again about three weeks after that.  I ran all the way to my back fence and back, about 250 FEET.

I moved inside to run on the soft track after I got out of the pool and started at 8 minutes, doing a 12 minute pace.  I did that for a week and then went up a little and moved outside.  It's been slow, but I am moving along around a 10 minute pace and 35 minutes.

This time I have stayed off the dreadmill.  I am resisting the urge to move up to fast.  My mind and lungs say keep going, but I am sure that's what got me in trouble before.

I am no expert but I think the soft track inside and the real slow start allowed my knee to heal and then build up strength again.  The slow progress is a bummer because a race on the 16th I have been looking forward to since last year is not going to happen, but that's life.

Of course my Dr said I should never run again, but he's fat and plays golf!

I hadn't run in about 14 years until I started tri training in April.  I started with the run/walk method on the treadmill at a 1% grade for about 10 weeks, slowly building volume but resisting (successfully I may add) the urge to increase my speed.  Once I felt that my legs were adjusting without any injuries, I then began slowly increasing speed for short durations.  When I transitioned to outdoor runs around the end of June, my legs felt good and I've been able to build both volume and speed at a faster clip than I would have thought.  Just be patient and take care of your body.
