Subject: Who's training for their first sprint?
My first race is next weekend and I've been following the free "Original 13 Week" plan.  I've been trying to look at other people's logs to see if I seem to be on track for my times and distances but it's hard to find the other newbs and I end up getting discouraged looking at the logs of some of the rock stars around here.  I've also looked at the race results for my sprint from last year and I know I'll be BOP but it's my first one so I'm trying not to care about that.  Anyone else out there in the same boat?  I'd love to see what everyone else is doing and any input on my workouts would be welcome.

I am in the same situation.  My first sprint tri is on 8-22. It is small, max 300. I sometimes doubt my training level and try to check out other newbs too.   I am starting to get more anxiety as the countdown has started.  I am still working on my swimming. I just got into a swim class at the ymca.  I finally had someone to point out some issues that I was aware of.  I plan on hanging out in the back of the pack and taking it slow. I know between the adrenaline, wetsuit and if necessary doggie paddle,  I know I can do it.  I am switching out my tires tonight at the LBS.  I had some IT band issues and  my running has been reduced.  I really hope that I will be able to run the 5k.  Either way, I plan on this begining a HUGE learning experience and next season will be more competitive for me. I had my training log going for a while but stopped posting on it.  I usually do not do double up workouts or bricks.  Simple 5 or 6 days a week.  I just tell myself that I'll never know if I am ready unless I just do it.  Then I will know exactly what I need to do next time.  Good luck and have fun.

My first one is the 23rd.  I know I can do each distance individually.  The question is can I do them all together!!!

I'm confident I can do the swim and the bike; but I'm not sure I'll have what it takes to get through the run after doing the other two events.

I'm sure I'll be bringing up the rear tooTongue out

Technically it is my second, but really my first bonafide sprint is next Sunday (the first was a reverse tri with a 150 yd pool swim and I consider it more part of my early tri training).  I attempted to follow a plan I printed out from here, but mostly I did my own thing on the training. I just upgraded my membership and only just started an 8 week training plan--it is so much easier for me having the planned imported into my training log--but I've been training and logging regularly since April or May. I've been swimming around 3x/week and that has really helped me. I feel really prepared for next week.  I cannot wait.

My first Sprint Tri is on 9/27(Nathans) in AZ.  I am doing the Couch to Sprint from this site and am 5 weeks in.  I know I can do the swim, bike and run but like the last poster JC5066 said doing them all together is another thing.  I am really trying to stick to the planned workouts and I will know on the 27th how I did.   I am not really looking to compete but complete so I am not worried about time.  Just want to make it fun.  Feel free to check out my logs.  Good luck to all in this post.  Looks like I will be the late starter and you can all tell me what not to do when it is my turn.

Regards,
TheDave

I decided to start with a try it on tri (300yd swim, 9 mile bike, 2 mile run).  It was either that or the Olympic distance (which i didn't think i was ready).  This will be my first, and it is September 19.

Havent signed up for my first yet. But i usually run 15 mins then swim for 45 2 days a week then swim 45 mins another 2 days. I dont own a bike so that makes training for that part difficult.

My first sprint is on 10/25.  I've been following the 16 week - 3x balanced plan.  I'm trying to follow it pretty closely.  I know I will be BOP too, and I just want to finish, be able to have an ok coming out of the pool, and hopefully be able to run the entire run.

Good luck to everyone on their first sprint!

You're all doing so great!  And I guess I'm not doing too terribly for my first season of training either.  It's nice to see what the rest of the novices are up to.  Thanks for sharing with me and good luck on all your races!

I'm just at the beginning of the game I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to completer a sprint tri. I have been working a lot on my swimming I feel that is my weak point for sure although I'm actually getting some rhythm down now. I feel like I have a ways to go so I have not set a date yet maybe I should do that so it will give me some more get up and go.

My first sprint is next weekend as well and I have been following the 12 week couch to sprint plan here.  Your logs are similar to mine (at least what I have posted - I sometimes get busy and don't log).  I know it is going to be very difficult for me but I am really just focusing on finishing in under two hours.  I did the entire distance with my daughter about a month ago on a whim so, I know I can do it and I started out in TERRIBLE shape!!!  So, I would say, don't worry....... you'll be fine!!  Good luck!

First sprint is 10/4

I used to swim and bike competitively and only ever ran a little a few years back for fun. Hadn't done anything in years other then a run or a ride here and there. Decided early June I was going to start swimming again that came back fast so decided to start riding as well, was already running once a week or so.  Officially didn't really decide to start doing a tri until middle of july and then injured my ankle shortly after so that has cut into my training, but I have two months.

I should be back on the bike and running this week, going to test my ankle on the trainer in the morning so if it starts to hurt I can stop immediately.

You'll see, if you check my log,  that even though swimming is my strong point that sees to be where I spent the most time but that's just mostly due to the injury at this point and also having started that sooner then the others. Not following any plans at this point, if I keep doing them and go for longer distances I will, right now I am just trying to increase my distance and speed on each a little at a time on my own.

Good luck everyone.

I too am training for a first sprint. My original plan was to complete our local one in Lake Erie on Aug. 29th. But as I started out having no swimming skills...it became evident that my goal was a bit lofty! When you have to learn to swim first, it drags out the process a bit. I am now on track for the Richmond, VA Sprint Oct. 11th. I don't really log my training other than on my own calendar. Just try to get 2-3 workouts of each in every week around my other responsibilities. I am a teacher, so summer is a great time for me to train. Other than my kids and hubby, I am very flexible! Can't wait for October!

I just completed my first mini-sprint 400m swim, 6 mile bike, 2 mile run.   I made LOTS of newbie errors, so I can tell you what not to do Undecided.

First of all, I practiced a little OWS, but I didn't practice sighting.  HUGE mistake.  I had to stop every 6-9 strokes to see where I was going, then get started again.  I probably swam 50% more distance than I needed to because of weaving around.

Second, when I got to T1, the chain was off my bike (sabotage??  it was a mountain bike for crying out loud), and I'm a biking novice and wasted 5 minutes trying to get it back on.

Third, leave the I-pod.  I refer to mine as a crutch for running, so I took it, but with all the other participants it was a total waste and got in the way.

Also, I finished BOP 278/299, partly due to the bike issue, and was pretty discouraged about it.  But then I thought, really I finished 278 out of the 250,000 or so that didn't show up.  So... you really have to realize that when you do a triathlon, you are with the fittest of the fittest and to not get discouraged about placement.  I'm slowly getting in better shape, and I'm better off than I was 3 months ago, so.... who cares where everyone else placed.   Of course, I hope to be WAY more competitive next time.

Up until today I was training for my first, but as of today, I am a triathlete.  A slow one, but one none the less.  I was using another training program because I didn't find this site until I was well into it, but trust your training.  If you are doing the time and the mileage, you will be able to finish, it may be BOP or MOP, but you will finish, which is the main goal for the first.

I will make one suggestion, swim as much open water as you can prior to the race.  I did one OWS and it went very well, so I was pretty confident going into race day, but there is a big difference when there are 30 people on the entire OW course, and 100+ starting all at the same time.  I know I went WAY too hard initially and it was killer toward the end of the swim, but get as comfortable as you can in the open water with crowds, it will make things somewhat easier.

Other than that, have fun, and enjoy the experience.  You only get one shot at your first time, enjoy it.

Hey everyone and crongrats on signing up for your first race.  My first tri is next weekend (Aug 16 - Take on the Heat), and I, too have been following the 13 week plan.

When I started, I could not swim 100m without stopping, and could not run a mile without stopping...the BT workout was great.  If you miss a day, make it up when you can, or just forget it all together...trust me, your body will thank you for the rest!!!

I also got involved with a tri group here in Dallas.  They have Sunday rides, and have taught me quite a few things abouot what to expect and how to push forward.  One thing I learned - PACE YOURSELF!!!  don't start too quickly, or you will not finish...A lesson I learned on one of my early brick training sessions.  I have slowed my pace, and am able to finish all of my training sessions.

Also, I was told that you should train to be able to complete 1.5x the distance in each dicipline...for example, if you have a 300m swim, you should train to complete a 450m swim. That way it is easier on race day when you try to do all three.

I hope that my post helped.  I am still a beginner, but have learned from some very awesome people along the way.  One thing about this sport...almost everyone is willing to take the time to share their knowledge...and I love that.

Good luck, and let us know how you do on race day!!!

Great post!  I'm training for my first sprint on 8/29 in Erie, PA. I'm following an 11 week training guide for novices but I jumped in at week 5.  It's been going okay, but I'm nervous about being kicked in the ows.  My goal is just to hang back and have fun so I hope it all goes okay.
I am new to this site so I don't log my training.  I'm following this training guide: http://www.trinewbies.com/tno_trainingprograms/10wtp.pdfand I really like it.

Good luck to everyone with their upcoming races!  I'll probably post questions as my race gets closer.

Hello

I am in the same boat.  My first race is 8/16/09

Crap thats next weekend or seven days away.  I should be training instead of reading this forum.

I was down at Hilton Head for the weekend with my family.  This morning my brother & I went to pool at 530 for swimming.  My brother completed his first Sprint last weekend and he was giving me some swimming tips.  Then we went out into the ocean for my first OWS.  Salt water is good to swim in and I think it went well.  I worked on sighting with a quick look ahead after taking a breathe.

So after swimming.  Back to condo for a shower and food, then off to golf course.  Front nine not too hot.  Back nine SC summer baby.    Three Redbull Sugar free's, 3 large waters, 3 Gatorade's help me get through the round.

Now home and wornout.

I did a practice Swim & bike ride on Saturday, My swim time for a continious 600 meters is down to 26 minutes.  I started at 47 plus for the 600 back in June.  Good thing about my Sprint race is that the swim is only 528 meters if I swim straight.

I did the bike ride 13 miles in 46 minutes I think (timing issues)   Cleaned my bike and found the chain rusty after the 50 mile last week in GA and the return ride home in the back of the truck in the rain.   So I cleaned & lubed my chain.  Bike is ready.

This week

Run   Monday -Thursday  AM
Swim  Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday Evening   Friday AM maybe  (See note)
Bike in the dark   Tuesday AM

Thursday Night Concert   Darius Rucker & Dierks Bentley   Two drink limit!!!!!!

Saturday  rest
Sunday  Get it On!

August 30 is my first sprint, and I am at that psychological combination of nervousness/excitement. I started working with a swim coach last week and it has helped tremendously with my breathing, which is something I was definitely nervous about.

My first tri is Aug. 22nd (Publix Family Fun Fitness - Ft. Desoto), I have been training since June 1st.  I did my second OWS this past Sunday and feeling confident about the swim portion.  Did my TT in the pool on Thursday with a 1:55/100yd.  I have done three 25/10 min bricks in the past few weeks while practicing my T2 dismount with shoes still clipped in.  I will be attempting a 4 mile run today with NO WALKING.  After that I will be gradually running and biking sockless till race day.  I have also slowly been reducing workouts with ipods, not allowed in my tri.  This coming weekend I will attempt a 35/20 brick on Saturday and a 10/20 swim/bike with T1 pratice on Sunday.  I ordered my 2XU shorts and singlet for race day and should be in by Friday.  I had my bike tuned this past weekend and will have a few rides on it this week.  I got my quick laces for my shoes and tinted Aqua Sphere goggles for swim last weekend, and will be picking up a race belt this weekend (just in case).  Am I missing anything?  Oh, I will also be taking a ice bath at least once this week, maybe more if I like it.  Good luck to all the newbies!

First tri is next Sunday 8/16 - the Sweet & Twisted women's only Sprint outside of Austin, TX.  It's going to be HOT!
I've been following the BT 13 week 2X training plan but started 4 weeks in.  I'm having a ball training!  Doing great with the biking and running.  Need a swim coach but can't afford it right now, so just practicing as much as possible.  I'm sure I'll make the 500m - I've gotten 3 OWS's in so far.
I'm super excited and just looking forward to the whole experience.  Feel free to check out my logs.  Good luck to everyone with upcoming races!
