Subject: Training Goals
I am training for my first tri and am wondering how should I go about setting up my goals? I obviously want to finish but I would also like to have some idea about what time goals I should have to give me something to work towards. (things like transition times as well). I'm 39/f  and have no athletic experience at all. I'll be doing a spirit tri the first time out. It really doesn't matter if I'm dead last but I just wanted a rough idea, something to be working towards. I have plenty of time since I plan on racing shortly after my 40th. Anyone out there with ideas or simular experience?
Thanks-

transition time goals are going to be dependent on the type of equipment that you are using...ie. changing between swim and bike, socks, clipless pedals, "slip on" runners...

Distance times really depend on your strengths...I'm a former competitive swimmer so I normally have a FOP finish out of the water and then get overtaken..My first tri was an indoor sprint (stationary bike, track run)...750m takes me about 12-13min, 20km ~45 min (this is with a mountain bike, havent done one with my fist bike), 5km ~25-30min...

My first "real" tri was a supersprint (1000m swim, 30km bike, 7.5km run)...I was pretty out of shape at that point still and I still finished Just take your time and pace yourself!!! YOU CAN DO IT!

When I was in your position, I studied the times of past races that I was thinking of entering to get an idea of what other people were doing. This let me get an idea of how my training times were compared to the field and how much faster I'd have to go to get various finishes (BOP, MOP, FOP).

Now that I've done a couple and have a lot more training under my belt, I go into each race with a time window I want to finish in and with an "in my dreams" time. I don't have placement goals because I don't consider that under my control.
