Clear Lake, Texas
United States
Total Time = 2h 38m 46s
Overall Rank = 130/330
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 19/32
Pre-race routine:

Still new to the sport. This is only my third Tri. I stretched a bit here and there. I only slept for about 3 hours (the nerves got to me) so I was pretty tired. I always have to wear contact lenses since I'm almost blind without them and I cant wear my glasses (not very tri friendly).
Event warmup:

The only warm up I did was about a 200m swim to test out the water.
Swim
  • 23m 25s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

This felt like a really long swim. It was my first long non stop swim without any walls to flip turn off of, so I was unsure of my pace. About half way through the swim I started getting a side cramp (but not too bad). The bad thing was my right eye was starting to hurt because of my contacts It felt like I had a sty, but finally went away after awhile of keeping my eyes shut.

1st in my age group...Awesome!!!
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s
Comments:

I wasnt expecting to be so winded after the swim. I took one gel pack and was looking at the other two to put into my suit pockets but forgot them. Huge mistake! I was busy trying to get my socks on, sunglasses, and helmet. Oh yeah and my eyes was still hurting! The side cramp was still noticable, probably getting worse.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 36s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.54 mile/hr
Comments:

The road in some sections were horrendous. It felt like loose gravel. Then there was an intersection where no police or race official should have been directing traffic. A few of us had to stop at a signal mid race (some were cussing away). Then towards the end a guy in a truck decides to slowly pull out in front of me, where I didn't have time to break...so I ram into the side of his car, while other drivers (thankfully on my side) started beeping and cussing out the guy in the truck. I'm fine a little bruised, but still rode on.
What would you do differently?:

Need to find a better nutrition intake schedule. That is if I hadn't forgotten my gels to begin with. And wont ever take Accelerade any more...probably only for recovery since it cost so much
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

I came into transition with one eye shut now. The sty in my eye is probably due to my lack of sleep the night before. I hadn't taken any nutrition since the start of the bike. All I had was Accelerade and Gatorade on my bike. Clearly not enough...and my side cramp were now just as soar as my bruised hands and legs for the tiny crash.
Run
  • 59m 36s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow!!! I guess this being my first Olympic distance and third Triathlon, I cant complain...but man! That was my worst run ever!!! I have so much to learn on nutrition intake during the bike...that is when I don't forget my gel packs at transition!! But still...soooo much to learn. *sigh*. Oh, and did I mention how much my eye hurt?!? I think I had tears in them for the entire race!
Post race
Warm down:

sulk

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'd definitely need to sleep better, relax, alcohol?...the night before. I wouldn't have had the eye problems I did. Also I really need to eat more during the bike.

Event comments:

As I mentioned in my bike comments, the race was good, but the set up and the stationing of road services was below race standards. I'd say the race was 90% organized.

Great job in your first Olympic distance! Sorry to hear about your troubles on the bike course. Glad it wasn't worse for you out there.

Solid performance for your first Oly, well done despite the road hazards. Please send Keith, race director your evaluation for next year.
