Subject: Sand in my bike gears.
I was riding my road bike down on the lake shore path in Chicago when a kid decided to dart in front of me.  I know this happens all the time but it was early (6am) so I was hoping to avoid it.  Anyway I did manage to avoid the little bugger by veering right in to the sand and bailing in to the comfort of a voleyball post.

Not hurt too bad, I'm just bummed all the sand got in my bike gears.  Anybody have this happen and know a good way to clean it out? I hosed some of it out but the grease soaked up some sand and it holds strong.  I have the Chicago Tri on Sunday and I'd like to have everything cleaned up.  Thanks for the help.

Do not use water.

Remove the chain, cassette and derailleur.  Put them in a pan or Tupperware and cover them with degreaser or bottled WD-40.  Let it soak for an hour.  Use and old toothbrush to scrub out the old grease and sand.  You'll have to really work each length of the chain.  If you can't get all the sand out of the chain, just buy a new one - they're not too much.  Remove it all from the pan and let air dry on an old towel or paper towels.  Then put them back on the bike and re-grease with a non-sticky, dry lube like Dry Ice.

Good to go.

Try soaking the entire drivetrain with Simple Green or some other degreaser and then hosing it off again.  Might have to use a small brush to get all the gunk out of all the nooks and crannies.  It might be a good idea to take the chain off and soak it separately and then re-lube it.

Hope you can get it cleaned up okay.

Good luck with your race.
