Subject: How many miles in a chain/cassette?

Evening all,

Any advice on the average life of a chain/cassettes/crank.

I have a little over 3000miles hard (very hilly) miles on my drive train and am starting to experience problems (eg. chain jumping off one cog on rear derailleur).

Wondering if its time for a new chain cassette - fyi, I keep the drive train clean (all sram, fsa compact double crank), cassette looks good, crank not so much teeth look worn and one was badly bent (straightened - vice grips, but expect to loose it - has a visable crack)

I'm a believer in preventive maintenance.  I replace all my stuff every 2K miles or so no matter what.  Then again I'm a gearhead and enjoy working on both my cars and bikes.

You should try to keep your chain and gears clean to reduce wear and oiled well, check that first, then check derailer adjustment, checking for wear is too easy and will save you money from guessing. Park tools.

With 3000 miles, you will probably have a stretch chain... which would cause a skipping drive train.

What worries me is that you are riding with a cracked chainring... loosing one tooth when you are pushing hard will very likely put you straight into the pavement... not a good thing. Chainrings are not that expensive to replace...

If you replace your chain every 1,500 your cassette and chainrings will last a much longer time.  You should not ride everything until it is too late.  Also, replace that cracked chainring.  That is just a major issue waiting to happen.  Like the poster said above, a little preventative work will save you a lot of money.  A new chain is much cheaper than new chain, cassette, and chainring.  I am worried that if you replace just the chain now you will still have issues because the cassette is also going to be worn more than you think.

Chain ring, yes. Chain yes... but why the cassette? You said that you keep it clean, so the cassette shouldn't be worn out yet. 3000 miles on a cassette is nothing (if kept clean), you can easy get 4 times the life out of that.
