Subject: Swim Question
This is going to sound like a silly question, but what stroke do people normally do during a triathlon? From what I've seen...the American crawl is most often used. The problem for me is that the backstroke is my strongest/fastest...and I'm going to look very strange jumping in and trying to swim upside-down and bass-akwards. Any hints on how to improve my crawl?

Thanks all...

Ruby

Ruby,
Coming from a swim background myself (age group swimming starting at age 5), I am comfortable in other strokes besides freestyle and often include a bit of backstroke/breaststroke during the swim , mainly to take a break and get my bearings.

Trouble with backstroke is that you will have a real hard time navigating with lots of other swimmers around.

I would start incorporating more and more freestyle ("crawl") into your swim sessions. As for gettign helpo with crawl, your best bet is to work with a local Master's team, or try bugging a good swimmer next to you at the pool...you'd be surprised how friendly and helpful some swimmers can be if you ask them for a minute or so of help !

Good luck,
Jay

I agree with Jay. I would add only one thing ----- Swim, Swim, Swim. Make sure you get a feel for the water and that is hard to do swiming only once or twice a week.

Thanks for your help. Actually, I swim almost everyday...and at the least 3-4 times per week. I've found someone to help me with my freestyle...hope it works!
