I had bursitis in my right knee and hip two years ago, and it has flared up with some frequency ever since--mostly in my knee, which is a weak joint anyway (thanks, mom and grandma!). The thing is, I am unwilling to completely suspend physical activity in order to avoid it, and when I go to the doctor they put me on a regimen of corticosteroids that do not interact well with my system otherwise. I have gotten into the habit of icing my knee after working out, but it doesn't always do the trick.

Does anyone here struggle with bursitis? Any tips on how to keep the inflammation down without having to a) stop training or b) going on the corticosteroids every time? I am very open to suggestions!! TIA

Hi Gina,

welcome to my world.

I have been having hip bursitis for about 2 years now and it has been on and off the entire time. I have been to the PT a lot in the last 2 years but what helped me was 1) Getting customised orthotics 2) Getting Vitamin B shots (as my Vitamin B count was way below the norm and one symptom of Vitamin B deficiency is frequent bursitis) and 3) stopped all PT Hip exercises and stretching (as I was overdoing it) and 4) Taking ice-baths after every run.

I started to ignore the pain in February this year and with lots of patience increased my running base and the hip has been "OK" ever since (even during my 14-15 hour training weeks) and I managed to race my first HIM in August. I have so far avoided all speed training for running but will start with is soon and hopefully the hip will be fine....

Good luck and I hope you get better soon!

Hmmm, that makes me wonder what my Vit. B levels are!

Right now it is so bad that I am unable to place any significant weight on my right leg when I'm in a stationary or semi-stationary position and my knee is bent. Sure made dance class interesting....in a very bad way. As in my knee gave out and I went DOWN.

Looks like a trip to the doc might be in my near future.

If it is that bad you should not work out and go see a doctor!!

Working out through accute bursitis usually makes things a lot worse!!

I know. The leg's elevated and iced, I'm all ibuprofened up, and I'll be calling this afternoon to make an appointment with my doctor. Boo hiss.

I also had this happen to me this year while training for my IM. Went to PT and stopped all speed work. That got me through the training and I was able to complete the race. I had a flare up a week and a half before the race and got a cortisone shot to get me through. It worked well but it is not the answer. This is new to me so I plan on spending the winter rehabing, stretching, and strengthing. Nothing really helped it other than the foam roller and stretching.

I have it in my shoulder.  I got a cortisone shot early in the summer - worked great. I took a couple weeks off, then went back just once a week with lots of kicking (for you hip/knee folks you could swim in the pool with a pull buoy), and have very gradually increased my yardage & intensity. It's doing well.

Also, a holistic midwife friend of mine suggested omega 3 oil capsules which I've been taking and have not needed the nsaids in a while (at least for joint pain).  They're a natural anti inflammatory.

good luck!
