Subject: Specialized crash replacement policy
On a recent ride, my wife took a spill and cracked the headtube on her Specialled Allez. She likes the bike and was loyal to the brand, so she went to a Specialized dealer to ask about getting a new frame under the crash replacement policy. They offered her a small percentage (at least it seems that way) off another complete bike. They said Specialized did not repalce frames alone under the crash replacement policy.

Anyone have any expereince they care to share about dealing with Specialized? Replacing complete bikes only with crash replacements when the components are already Ultegra and work 100% fine seems silly to me. Not a great way to keep customers on their bikes.

I believe Specialized will replace the frame if the crack was a flaw of thiers, but not wear and tear.

I would call Specialized directly and explain the situation.

I actually dealt with Specialized and the crash replacement program earlier this summer when I ripped the fork off and bent the frame by driving it into the garage on my roof rack. Embarassed

They offer both complete bikes and frames alone under the program, so if the dealer told you complete bike only, they were ill-informed. Replacement, however, is solely dependent on Specialized's available inventory for the program (NOT the dealer's). And the problem for me was that the inventory was pretty much nonexistent at the time of my accident. Initially, I was offered a Ruby frame, which would have been an upgrade from my current Dolce frame, since that was all they had in my size. I would have had to pay the dealer to strip the parts off the totalled bike and put them on the new bike. The dealer putzed around too long, and the Ruby frame was gone within a couple of days and the only thing they had available was a downgrade on a complete bike. I was not happy (since I lost the Ruby due to the dealer's slowness to act), so ultimately the dealer gave me a new Dolce out of their inventory, planning (I assume) to hold on to the old bike until inventory came back into the program and they could get reimbursed for it. They did strip the parts off my old bike and give them to me but held onto the frame to turn into Specialized.

I can't remember exact prices now, but the discounts were pretty significant off of MSRP. I know that at one point, it was only going to cost me a couple hundred dollars out of pocket (see note below) to get the upgraded Ruby frame, before that fell through...

One note, if you haven't already, check with your homeowner's insurance. Even though it was completely my fault, they 100% covered the bike. With the deal that the dealer gave me on the new Dolce, I actually came out pretty much even on the whole fiasco, even after my $500 deductible.

So: a) Call your insurance company and b) Call the dealer back or find another dealer to check with. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who works for a Specialized dealer in another area, so she was able to get me inside info and tell me straight-up what I was dealing with. I did, however, check with another dealer in my city to make sure that the dealer I was going to was telling me the whole story.
