Subject: Nerves of First Tri
I'm new to all of this and am getting really nervous about my first tri this coming Sunday... i think it's because i'm still not 100% comfortable on the bike- i guess when I started out I was asking lots of different questions and therefore getting so many different answers.... ie. some say to ALWAYS stay on the small ring (unless going down hill) and others are telling me that I should always be on the big ring if the course is flat.

The tri on Sunday is a flat course and I can just see everyone speeding passed me on the big ring which is making me feel a little less than.......... I don't really know what I'm asking here- i think i'm just looking for words of wisdom/advice or general chat about what other people's first tri's were like.....

Yours nervously,
C.

It's not unusual to feel nervous for your first, second, fifth etc tri.  Nervous anticipation. Try and use it to your advantage.

You didn't mention the bike distance or your goals.  Assuming it's your first race and since you mention it's flat - maybe just find a gear you feel comfy in that you can keep your cadence high (90+).  If you encounter a hill - move into a smaller ring and keep the cadence the same.  Downhill or flats = bigger gear but cadence stays the same.  And forget about getting passed - it's gonna happen sooner or later unless you are aiming to be #1

Good luck with it!
