Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread WELCOME!!! If you have not registered for the TIMBERMAN, IRONMAN 70.3 yet, you are thinking about it because you are reading this. I've often looked at this event over the years with hopes of someday making the trek east and giving it a go. 2010 is going to be my chance to toe the line and I'm excited as heck to give it my best. Here's a little background on me: I've completed over 85 multisport events in my life ranging from duathlon, triathlon, and one single-day-sprint adventure race. I've competed in events ranging from sprint to the full-Ironman. Although my best distance is probably the sprint of the .5mi/18mi/4mi run variety, my favorite distance is the 1/2 Ironman, and I find the Ironman distance most interesting and I am drawn to its punishment (I've done Wisconsin '07 and Louisville '09, and I hope to get back on the Ironman horse in 2011...I don't know where yet though). I'm in the 35-39 age group and I'm grateful that I love the sport of triathlon because I am addicted to it. I look forward to sharing trials, tribulations, successes, and experiences with those who want to share their rode to... Timberman, Ironman 70.3! Peace.

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread It's October...so why start chatting about an event that is ten months away? Because it fuels the fire baby. Yes, it's the off-season for me, and for many, but that's ok. What are you doing? I'm currently doing very little, but I have started lifting weigts, I've been doing some light cycling...maybe twice a week, and I'm easing back into running with a walk/run plan so my self-diagnosed calf strain can recover and build strength. I am excited that I'm at 2min. walking/3 min. running x 4 at this point. Yeah, I feel a little like jello rather than iron, and it seems like my fitness level is in the negative numbers, but that's the way it is right now. Keepin' it on...lightly. Peace. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Jon- If I read some of your material right, this is only your second year in the sport...and you did a HIM in your first year! That's impressive. It took me a long time to get the courage to take on the longer stuff. Of course I was diggin' the heck out of the shorter races. If I can stay healthy, I hope to get back to doing more races this season. I used to do between 8-9 a season. In 2009 I only did three. Stay healthy. Peace. |

Master 1410 White Plains NY | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread nrichey - 2009-10-24 7:23 PM So what's the toughest part of this course? \on the bike, the climb @ ~mile 10 and the climb on the other side of that hill ~mile 46. this year, the heat/humidity was the toughest part on the run course i felt those were the toughest parts. im sure others had difficulties elsewhere. i'd preview the course beforehand if you are doing the race |

Expert 701 Caratunk, Maine | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread I am in for Timberman - my first HIM. I am very excited, and I am psyched there are discussions already starting about it. I did my first tri in May 2009 (sprint) and loved it. Actually, some that I live with would say I am obsessed...ha...I did another sprint and finished this year with an Olympic distance race, and mentally at least, I am ready to attack the HIM. My biggest challenge is fitting the swim in over the winter - the closest pool is 1h15m away. This summer I trained all open water, so that was great. My plan is to fit it in when I can. I am looking at 4 inches of snow right now... Onward and Upward! Mandy Caratunk, ME |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Mandy - Ah, you picked a good one for your first! It was my first HIM as well -- back in '01, the first year of the race. I did it again in '04, and am weighing T-man vs IMLouisville for next season. Tough call.....but the allure of the 10th anniversary carries a lot of weight. Your comment about 4 inches of snow reminds me of the first report Keith Jordan made about the Timberman swim course. He posted this in something like March, saying that the course was looking very flat, and very white, and very cold. I think there was also a temperature report, presumably from Keith augering through the ice. This is all slightly fuzzy now, as it's getting on a few years and I am two months away from turning 61. Yeah, 75 minutes is a bit of a haul in order to swim! For all the years I have been doing this stuff I have had to drive 35-45 minutes each way, and I thought THAT was bad! But, like you, I do virtually all of my summer swims in open water, starting about the first of June here in Ontario. So, to my way of thinking - and with necessity being the mother of invention - those open water swims are worth their weight in gold when it comes to being comfortable swimming at the longer distances. So, find solace in the fact that your open water swim season is "only" a mere seven months away! |

Expert 701 Caratunk, Maine | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Thanks Sam & Steve! Hope to see you both at TM! Let's keep the excitement going, at least to continue to motivate through the off-season. Steve - Thanks for your support on the swimming - good points about training in open water. I actually got a swim in yesterday, so that was good. My goal is to get out at least once a month (more if I can) for some laps. Off for a short run now, it is beautiful today! Mandy |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Sunny and 70 degrees in MICHIGAN today!!! Had an excellent relaxed ride (albeit) a hilly 25 miles with my friend Ryan. Started "running" again yesterday. Right now I'm on a walk/run 2min. walk/2min. run plan because after I nursed my left calf back to health, my right calf had a strain. If I this time getting back does not work, I'll stick to cycling, lifting, and soon swimming. Which reminds me, I need to lift tonight. I got sucked in to watching the Lions get beat...AGAIN. Peace, ~Sam |

Champion 10618 | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Mandy - Well, even here in eatern Ontario I managed to squeeze in a very pleasant outside ride on Monday, even going sockless in my cleats! The problem I had was timing, and not yet being adjusted to the earlier onset of darkness. So, I got only about 23 minutes from home and realized that it was getting dusk-ish, and I beetled back as fast as I could, as my last km is on a busy road that would soon be filling with commuters. Doh! |

Expert 701 Caratunk, Maine | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Sam, That is awesome about your kids being so active! Very cool for your daughter to do the 5K, I can't picture my 10 year old nephew doing that. Good for her. I am the only one in the house (actually the family) who is interested in tris, marathons & running in general...I bet the Timberkids will be super fun for the kids (& for me to watch!) The Pirate Tri in Maine has a kids race and it is really cool. Spinning for 40 minutes today, and began the 100 push-up challenge (100 consecutive push ups)...I am at 40, so I have some work to do! Best, Mandy |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Timberman - Half Iron : Official Thread Mandy- You're a friggin' animal. 100 push-ups! Sheesh! My intention was to get on the bike in the basement for 30 minutes, but I'm cooked. I will say, reading about your day has sparked a little inspiration in me, so I just might make it down there. I'll have to give up watching Heroes though. I've had a mild headache for the second half of the day, so it's one of those deals where you wonder if rest or an easy workout is better. Peace, ~Sam |
