Youngstown YMCA Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

Youngstown, Ohio
United States

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 35s
Overall Rank = 22/100
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

Arrived early, set up transition, body marking, and chatted with fellow triathletes.
Event warmup:

10 minute run and 200 meter swim
Swim
  • 07m 51s
  • 400 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim time included exiting the pool plus a short run to the transition area. First time swimming with tri top, felt a little odd but okay. Kept a steady consistant pace, I didn't want to go out too fast and end up slowing the pace at towards the end. Pool water felt great! The swim felt like it was over in a matter of moments.
What would you do differently?:

Tighten chip timing strap. The water caused the strap to loosen and was distracting.
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Felt it was a good performance for my first attempt at transition.
What would you do differently?:

Will try practicing with shoes clipped to the bike
Bike
  • 44m 11s
  • 14 miles
  • 19.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Posted overall PR for the course. Probably my favorite part of the race. Cool temps, sunshine, hilly/twisty roads....good stuff!
What would you do differently?:

Maybe drink a little more on the bike. Remember to stretch on the bike while heading near T2....cramps to follow after T2.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Again, need to practice removing shoes while still clipped on.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!!
Run
  • 24m 27s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 53s  min/km
Comments:

Legs started to cramp upon exiting T2 so I had to slow the pace a little. After about a mile I was able to increase to my normal pace. Felt strong at the finish as I increase the pace with 1/2 mile to go. 40 seconds off my PR 5K time.
What would you do differently?:

Stretch on the bike before T2. Practice running without socks to increase T2 time.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged around for about 5 mintues to settle heart rate.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Experince, 1st attempt at triathlon.

Event comments:

Overall very good race, for myself and for others that I talked to. Very well organized and the volunteers were great!!

Congrats on your first race!  I competed in this race too- ok, competed is probably the wrong word...maybe completed is better.  Way to go on the bike segment- when I went to the pre-race meeting and saw what the bike course looked like I nearly talked myself out of showing up for the race!

Debi,
Thanks and congrats to yourself! The bike wasn't an typical tri bike course, but it was my first so I didn't know any better. I also trained on the course so I felt that was a big help. Looking forward to next year!
