I have so much to learn about riding and would LOVE to try riding with a group.  Anyone know of any club/group rides around here that are appropriate for a newbie?  I have tried looking online, but not much luck finding a group that didn't seem like they are super serious and speedy.  I also spoke with some octri members but it didn't seem like the right fit either.

I haven't ridden with them, but have a friend who rides with Lightning Velo.  They seem reasonably beginner-friendly.  Based in Long Beach but I see them riding around Seal Beach/Huntington Beach all the time.

That looks great (at least based on their website)!  Thanks for the info!  I think I will try it out next Saturday!

I'm in HB, you are in HB and I noticed a post from bfoyle between you guys that he'd do it.  3 is a group.  A small group, but a group nonetheless.  It could be the "2 from HB and 1 from Orange Under 17 mph Cycling Club".  I make apparel for a living I will supply the jerseys.

Love it!  haha!  I think that name will fit perfect on a jersey...if it the text wrapped around and around and around it.    All joking aside, we really should meet up for a ride.  We should also meet up for a CDM swim (once the water warms up.  You would never be able to get me in that cold water right now!)

Just curious, why did you say that OC Tri did not seam like much of a fit?  I am thinking about joining that group and would be interested in your response.

I have talked to a couple members and they said that it is hit or miss who shows up to the workouts and often there isn't a very big showing.  I would like to get out with a group that is a bit bigger so that there will be someone that will match my speed. (I am a front of the back of the packer-it is unlikely that I will ever be one of the speedy ones)  However, that is just based on two people's opinions.  Let me know if you check it out.  I would love to hear about it.

I am a member of OC tri and sometimes its tough because I think most live in the south OC area.. not too many northerners..  I live in HB and typically ride the santa ana river trail.. that's what I trained on for IMAZ..  I am training at the moment for LA 26.2 but will be giving the bike a short workout this friday morning, if it's not raining..  I plan on 25-30 mile easy ride around 15MPH..  I am newbie friendly, but will not ride on PCH... sorry...  I am not scared of too many things anymore, but open ocean swimming another one and open road riding is the other.  When the time changes in April and the weather gets nicer, I plan on longer rides on Saturdays...  Starting at the beach to the Green River golf course is about 28 miles one way..

Lori...

Sounds like we have at least a few HB and area members. Does anyone want to take the initiative and set up a ride for the HB area? Weather report sounds like this weekend is a bust unless we all get our trainers together. (JK). Sat is supposed to rain and Sunday is the Surf City Marathon.

Next Sat I should be on a ride, run brick. It'll be a short ride, for me but I will hang out for a while.

I've ridden with them a few times...it has always been a smallish group depending on what else is going on and who has races and stuff upcoming. Usually very friendly and often transitions into a run after the ride if you're into bricks.

I'm a member of the OC Tri Club as well as the other poster.  The club is really trying to drive more interest by organizing more events and communicating more effectively.  In the past, it was hit or miss on who showed up.  Lately, it has gotten better.

There are a number of different capability levels on the rides and nobody really gets "dropped."  We will regroup at certain points (e.g., turnarounds, etc.) to ensure everybody is still with the group.

You can always come to one of the rides and just check it out.  I find the club to be friendly and pretty mellow.

Thanks.  I would be interested to give them a try.  Unfortunately, our oldest son just started baseball so my Saturdays will be busy for the next several months.

You've revived a nine year old thread. Don't be too disappointed if you don't get any responses.
