Subject: My dog was bit. What to do with the bill?
My wife was running the dog this AM when 2 unleashed dogs came up on them with their owners running and driving after them. One was a black the other she wasn't sure but was larger then our golden retriever and the other lab. The owner yells out that the dogs only play at that moment then the lager dog pins my dog down and starts biting at his neck. The owner can’t pull the dog off him. Finally my wife gets our dog out from under the other larger dog. The lady says nothing and drags the dog into car swearing at them.

Our dog came out with a blood coming from the corner of his eye (only skin cut) and a 1inch puncture wound in his neck. We took him to the vet and fixed and dressed the wound and gave him an antibiotic for the infection. We came out with a $194 bill.

We are going to go talk to the other dog owners tonight. I hope the take responsibility and pay but something tells me they might not

What do we do then?

What should we say to them?

Thanks

does your city have a leash law?  If so and they refuse to pay your dog's medical expense I'd suggest taking them to small claims court.... and oh definately report the dog to the county so there is a record of aggressive behavior.

Good cop/bad cop approach.  Check and see if there dog is ok and explain that your dog was hurt and you took it to the vet to get check out.   See if they are willing to pay the bill.  Explain to them if they pay the bill all is forgetton, if not you'll report it to the police and animal control.  Most places Animal control will quaretine(sp) the dog(s) and if the dog(s) shows any aggression during this time it will be put down.  Not to mention they will have to pay for the quaretine (sp).  (Please note, this in most county's but not all county's)  Let us know how it turns out.  I wih you the best of luck and a quick recovery for your dog.

We had a similar situation with our dog, neighbors dog left their yard and bit our dog. They did pay the vet bill, but I would also suggest filing a police report. You do not need to press charges, BUT there needs to be a record. I love dogs, and do not want to see anything happen to mine or anyone's, but what if it was an older lady walking her little dog, or a young child (teen) not as strong, capable as your wife? Could they have been bit. If you don't file the report, then the next bite becomes the "first" bite (on record). We told the neighbors we were doing this and they completely understood (of course it happened again, although since I now carry pepper spray I was able to prevent a bite this time). If it happened once it WILL happen again.

Glad to hear that your wife and dog are ok.

Glad it worked out. BUT......

x2 on reporting the dog... no charges but a record.  My daughter was bit in the butt while selling girl scout cookies 4 years ago.  Found out only later the dog had a history of such things but noone in the neighborhood had ever reported it so when we went to do so it was his first strike - when in reality he had bit 5 other people.

ETA - guess it is a good thing to have a dog who bits when the owner is a pimp-drug dealer.....
