Pre-race routine:

We drove up to Tempe the night before the race so that everybody could get a couple of extra hours of sleep, rather than trying to drive all the way up to Prescott at 3am. (Our start time was 8:30am.) I think I ended up actually only getting about 1.5 hours of sleep anyway, after picking up the rental vans, driving up, packing the vehicles, etc. Oh well.
Event warmup:

We got the start line with the early crowd (this race start is staggered based on expected run times.. and since my team was slow compared to most, we had a very early start time). Josh was the first runner, so we all cheered him on as they announced each starting team and got the race started. I was runner #2, so tried to stretch out on the drive over to the exchange.

Comments:

I ran slowly, as predicted, but man, this was fun!! Our team was such a good group, and we had a blast. I have to say though, running into traffic on Highway 93 in the middle of the night... kinda scary! Over the course of the race, I think I got maybe 3 hours of sleep. Which on top of my 1.5 hours of sleep the night before... well, yeah. I was tired. But we ran on adrenaline, and fun music, and lots of caffeine and goofiness. We weren't there to win anything, we just wanted to run the race and enjoy ourselves. Mission accomplished 100%.

I was supposed to run legs 2, 14, and 26 of the race. I ended up running legs 2, 14, and 35. Around 1:45am, a runner was hit by a car and the race got stopped for a few hours. They decided to cancel legs 18-23 of the race, and since our second van of runners was eager to run after having to miss their second legs, we ended up switching the last two sets of runs (so they ran 24-29 and we finished 30-36). Sadly, the young guy who got hit died a couple of days after the race. Kudos to the race organizers though.. at the time it happened, people were upset and frustrated with how things were handled, but in retrospect, the RD and crew did a damn good job of allowing the race to continue on at all after such a horrible accident.

After switching around the last legs of the race, we all decided that Josh should be the one to cross the finish line, since he organized the whole thing for us. As he was sprinting down to the line, the whole team jumped in and ran the last few hundred yards with him to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing! This was awesome! I hope we do it again next year!

Doing my first Ragnar in April with my wife and friends.  She did Las Vegas where another runner was killed.  Any suggestions on making it safer out there at night?  She had a blast and we are looking forward to the race but want to be careful too!

Las vegas was impossible to fix. The guy was hit by a drunk driver. The death at our race was entirely avoidable however. The kid was running across the road at night to support his runner with some water.

We saw tons of vans doing this, and while nice, I would prefer to keep the vans only at the stops and not on the sides of the roads all over the place. Make sure all you folks are wearing vests and the such at night (not just your runner). And absolutely don't take any chances... once the hours start piling up you start getting a little loopy and well... mistakes happen.

Best of luck on your future Ragnar Adventure!
