Let it begin...

According to Accuweather.com.  Liking the wind predictions but really, they don't know what it will be doing tomorrrow!

In a perfect world (although I am hoping that's accurate Smile).

I have found Accuweather to be the absolute worst in their long-term forecast, although I don't rely too much on anything more than 5 days out. NOAA tends to be more spot-on with their overall weather forecast, although their wind predictions are hit or miss.

Here's hoping for a beautiful day and a great race for all.

I'm not sure what wind conditions would be worse, direct cross the entire time or slight tailwind out and head wind home.  Guess we can all hope for a single day on the coast without wind and prepare for the worst!

I rode the course a couple of weeks ago with a cross/headwind out. Then, was looking forward to a cross/tailwind coming back. WRONG!. The wind shifted to maintain the cross/headwind. As the road curved more eastward, the wind followed. At that point I thought I was going to get to more of just a crosswind. WRONG again! The wind swirled around more making it completely head on. Dang! Bad day to plan a brick workout. I only made it 4 miles of my intended 6. Rough.

That's my biggest concern, the ever shifting headwind!  Can't control it so we'll all deal with it in 10 days+/-.  The good thing is we all get to experience nearly the same conditions.  I'm still looking forward to the ride, even if it is brutal!

I'm hoping for about 60 and no wind..how likely is that?

So I heard we can't swim prior to the race. We fly in Friday and I would like to 1 or 2 ows in before the race Sunday. Are there other places down there protected to swim?

It takes me usually a couple ows to feel comfortable each spring don't' really want first ows to be the race.

Kathy, a lot of the Houston-area folk go here:
http://288lake.net/

It's very close to Hobby Airport and about 30-45 minutes from Galveston. The water in no way replicates Offat's Bayou, but if you are just looking for the feel of open water, this is a great place to go. Water temps there have been in the high 60s.

Well, the beach to the Gulf is about 1 mile south of Moody Gardens... surf, water temp, currents will likely be very different... but it's open water.  Offat's Bayou - not looking good.

It's a bit of a drive from Galveston (39 miles - but closer than 288), but Twin Lakes on Saturday is the closest 'closed' swim that I know of.   288 Lake is too far from Galveston.  Maybe others who live down that way know better options (Bay Area Multisport peeps maybe?)

Thanks for the ideas...

We are flying Southwest into Houston and arrive mid day Friday.

I have noticed that most Ironman's in US aren't doing Gatorade Swims before the races due to liability issues I guess this is just an off shoot of that.

Race morning will we be able to swim before anyone starts or before our waves go off?
