I did the race twice.  The 1st year 08’ it was in the Fall and the 2nd 09’year was in the spring.  I am not doing it this year but thought you might see what I posted this in the IMLP thread.

The race is held in a very nice area with plenty of logging around.  We stayed in Clinton NJ both time, not far.  The run and swim are in the Spruce Run recreation area so good for spectators and family.

Swim is a rectangle course in a dark fresh water reservoir.  Can be cold, I think it was 68 and 63 temp wise.  There is about a 200yds sandy beach run and another 50yds on pavement to transition.  Transition was changed in 09’ to the parking lot for the better, it was on the grass area.

Bike leaves the Spruce Run recreation area goes out for one big loop in the Jersey country.  The bike course has a lot of straight legs that are flats and slight grades with smooth roads.  There are some technical turns with a short bit of windy single lane country road.  Total climbing is about 2500ft so not too bad.  Definitely a aero course and can be very fast.  I really like this course.  I would strongly recommend to drive the bike course.

The run was two loops in Spruce Run recreation area.  It is mainly flat with some grades and plenty of support.

Overall it was a very good race in my opinion.  I thought the race was well done with the same RD both years.  I would recommend it and I will probable do it again in the future.

UrsusAdiposimus - 2010-05-04 10:01 AM Also signed up - this is my "tune-up" for IM CDA. That is actually great to hear that the bike is 2500' of climbing - that is the exact amount of climbing per loop of IM CDA, so looks like I picked a good race

I looked up what my Garmin 305 Edge reported and total ascent was 2253ft.  Still not bad.

I'll be there.  This is my first half (so I'm a bit nervous) and also a tune up for RI 70.3 in July.  The course looks beautiful.  63degree water?  Brrrrr....

Anyone know if you can pick your packet up on Friday or on race morning? I sent them an email today asking but figured I'd ask here as well. Thanks!

I did the preview ride there last Saturday. It is kind of what you'd expect for the area. Some back roads that are a little sketchy, there was one metal bridge that we walked. I did hear the bridge would be covered for the race.  Some of the roads get decent traffic so be aware, I can't imagine they close the roads. All in all it didn't seem too bad.

I am in but just cant figure out the weather- every forecast is different, rather annoying.
I got an email form them that they are having limited packet pickup on race morning for those traveling race day (such as myself). Athlete guide was posted last night and they are rolling out some matt on that metal bridge and are having a strict 10MPH limit on the bridge.

I had a buddy ride the course last week and he told me it was pretty tough and hilly (and he can climb like a billy goat). He did say that it was very windy too, so that may have been the culprit.

PennState - 2010-05-23 5:41 PM I DNFed.

Poorly marked course, few volunteers. Went off course a bunch of times. Took a 1.5 mile wrong turn on the run (was directed to make a turn with other sprint racers) and called it a day.

Sadly I would not recommend this event.

WOW!  That is tough to deal with.

Just goes to show how a race can change from year to year.

Who was the RD?

So sorry to hear that you DNF. My buddy took a wrong turn on both the bike and the run, he was not happy.

Overall, I enjoyed the course.  You really had to pay attention to the signs, which were small.  I could easily see how people could get lost.

The thing that really angered me was the RD's carelessness about transition security.  I ran past transition at the 6-hour mark of the half and noticed that the fencing for transition was already broken down and nobody was watching the fort.  Horrible and totally careless, in my opinion.  The RD should charge more and hire people to watch our gear investments.

Even though I enjoyed the course, I will not be back for this reason.

I got lost too and was not happy.  Parts of the course were not safe at all and it was not well marked.  On the website they went out of their way to mention how flat the bike course was with only a few small climbs which is simply not the case.  It was a very challenging bike course.  I am not adverse to a tough bike course but I would have trained differently and simply been more mentally prepared.

They also ran out of finishers medals so almost half the participants did not receive one.  The bragged on the website about how great their medals are and then don't even order enough for the registered athletes???  Are you kidding?

They also chinced on the bike race numbers.  They were like tissue paper and fell of everyone's bike about ten minutes in.  So later, when your bike is left fairly unguarded with no race number on it, anyone could walk away with your ride.

And finally, the post race food tent was no where near the finish.  I was so tired and frustrated and I just wanted to grab a banana and and a drink, but after just finishing a half iron, I was in no mood to walk to the other side of the park to get it.  We loaded the car and stopped at a convenience store on the way home.

All this is such a bummer, because the course is absolutely gorgeous!  I would love to do this race again.  I'd just like to see it be better organized.  I sincerely hope they get their act together.

The course was very good. Everything else was terrible.
Mandatory meeting before swim: Never happened.
Awesome finisher's medal: Never saw one.
Goody Bag: Chapstick.
Transition area: abandoed.
2 lap run with no timing mat for lap 2: How many skipped lap 2?
Mats over metal bridge: 2 mats about 5 feet wide and not long enough.
Compuscore: No split times.
NJ Multi-sports: Never again.

I thought it was a pretty decent day. There were a lot of volunteers and they were very friendly. Run course had lots of aid stations. Police presence at major roads. BBQ was very good afterwards. Tshirt was pretty nice and soft. I tend to think Triathlon is a lot like golf. You call your own fouls and you are only cheating yourself if you don't follow the rules. If someone skipped a lap because there weren't timing mats at the turnarounds, then shame on them. I could care less if they did though as I only care about how I did against my own personal goals. Though I doubt anyone intentionally cut the course. Overall I thought it was a good race and would do it again. Split times are posted as well....it just took a day to get them up.
