Note: I say things the way I see them.

Went to the “beginner” clinic on Saturday, waste of time (three and one half hours), gas (four and forty-four hundredths gallons) and money ($10.00 for the gas). They more or less read the course description we had all been emailed.

Sunday: Put everything but the bike into the car Saturday night. Alarm went off at 4:30 AM (0430 hours), hit snooze twice (I always do that), got up at 4:45 am, and got out the door by 5:20, put the bike on its rear external rack (I do not even get up this early for work... why in the world do I do this...). Drive my getaway car to the race 1 hour away. Got there with sufficient time.
Event warmup:

Warm-up… I know how to warm up for a bike race, but a du… I ran around a bit… went to the bathroom three times…

This is not a bike race, so I do not know enough about foot pacing yet. I started very slow so I would not blow up, again, like I have on foot. Several of them took off like I was standing still. I had to resist the road bike pursuit tactic. About 1 mile into the first run I met up with a lady who I ran with to T1.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I did not blow up so I am very happy.

This was the better of the two transition, almost forgot my bike shoes :), but I got out the door. There has to be a better way to lay this stuff out with out looking at it like I am a dummy…

This is my place... I passed a TON of people, mostly women; I was only passed by about three or four people. Mainly because all the faster people already passed me on the run :). One dude on a Lightspeed was dogging me for a while but I think he could not corner very well. So, pulled a few crit turns on him, jumping out of the corner had my Michelin Pro Race tires on, these things grip fairly well. After a few jumps I dropped him.

Now they had warmed us over and over again about this one “big” downhill near the end of the bike course... Well, when I got there… it was a slight downhill with a standard right hand turn… no problem with it at all. I was expecting this mile long 10% grade descent… I think they were a bit overly dramatic.
What would you do differently?:

Try a bit harder.

He-he… I should just skip this section, sweep it all under the rug, never bring it up, and if anyone asks rudely changed the subject :).

But I won’t, in fact I have come to confess:

My severe shortage of real world experience with multisport events was shown in this T2. There is theory then there is practical application. I know it is my own entire fault; I have never practiced this before. :)

There, now I feel better. :D

After coming into the dismount area to fast, I can say the new bike has good brakes :); I got it into the transition area, put it on the rack. Then just kind of looked around at my stuff, and kind of thought… ok, now what. I did finally get my helmet and shoes off, put on my number belt and fuel belt, put on some bug spray from a lady a few doors down (thank you). Grabbed my run hat (later lost my run hat), and started the five mile run nice and slow so I would not blow up.

This was the good part of the race! I ended up doing better then I thought. About .5 to .75 miles into the run I ended up running with a lady (Laura), for the whole rest of the race. I had met her, passed her, ran with another lady, that lady dropped me then Laura caught back up to me. We stayed together the rest of the race. We talked about the race and terrain, encouraging each other. She even laughed at my bad jokes. We were taking turns leading, saying each other was the lead out person. Running with her kept me from walking the rest of the race, and she said the same thing. We finished together, or well I was one (1) second a head of her. She got 3 out of 5 in her du age group.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, run more...
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some of their free food, drank water, drank my PowerBar Recover drink (fairly good stuff), hang around with Laura for a few minutes, thanked her for her help.

Event comments:

Well I finished in under two hours, my overall goal!

You know two things that I have noticed about multisport events when compared to road bike racing. There is a lot more women, and there seems to be a lot of husbands and wives that race together.

Good job. Sounds like you had a good race, and have identified what you need to work on. If it makes you feel better, my transitions suck too
