![]() Swim
Comments: And there was current, and it was with us, and it was good. Current was about the same as last year, maybe a bit more. You had to hold on to a rope to avoid being swept down river while you waited for your wave to start. The rope was crowded so I just sat on the platform and let the fish get out in front. Navigation was ok and stroke felt good. What would you do differently?: I think there is still room to pick it up a notch on the swim. Focus on form over speed to maximize efficeincy. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Time is deceiving because of the long run from the swim finish to the transition area. I thought I was much faster than last year but actually only picked up a minute. What would you do differently?: Still have to work on getting heals out of wetsuit. Need to get shorter socks. ![]() Bike
Comments: Second race with the new bike and I'm still loving it. The 10 day vacation before the race away from the bike did not help. My arms were sore from being in the aero position for most of the race. Additionally, need to fine tune my shifting as there were a few instances I was afraid the chain was going to fall off. Best part of race this year was that I was actually racing. Last year I was so late getting out of the water that I only saw a handful of people. This year it was crowded, but in a good way. What would you do differently?: Need to work on higher cadence in larger gear. The gear heads going past me looked very comfortable spinning in higher gears. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: This is more like it. Now if I can only get my T1 time down. ![]() Run
Comments: Pretty good effort. Running was the most neglected part of my training so I was happy that I at least improved. I was helped by latching onto another runner in my age group at the 1 mile mark. We traded the lead several times over the first several miles. I used to run the park alot and knew there was a short hill 3/4 mile from the finish. I decided to practice "racing" (instead of just running) and really pushed up the hill hoping to drop him. He faded and I survived long enough to beat him. What would you do differently?: Pick up the training again. Sprinkle in some speed work. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Ah, warm-down. That would have been a good idea. Event comments: This was my second year at the NYC triathlon and it was again a well organized event. I like the format, the course, and the people. It was one of the days that everything seemed to go right for me and I finished 17 minutes faster than last year. There is still plenty of room for improvement. But for now I am going to enjoy the results of a year of moderately hard work. Until next year.... p.s. They video taped everyone at the finish so here is the link to my tired body coming across the line. I'm in the maize/blue trisuit crossing at about 3:35:56. http://triathlons.accenture.com/NewYork/tracking/Video.aspx?bib=181... Last updated: 2005-07-10 12:00 AM

Spent the night at a friend's apartment in the city. Woke up at 4:30am and quickly downed a cup of coffee. My well intentioned friend set it up to brew automatically the night before but failed to properly place the filter so the grounds helped me wake up. I imagined it was Greek coffee and left the last sip. All was fine. Finished packing my tribag and caught a cab to the boat basin. Munched on a banana on the walk up to the swim. Thankfully the coffee kicked in just in time.
Walked the mile up from transition to the swim start.
