Comments: Breathing slightly elevated at start from nerves and from jitters of having to make my way through the slimy pond weeds. Better once I got going. What would you do differently?: Keep swimming faster through the weeds, relax more, bilateral breathing. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Great transition out of suit. Had my bucket o' water ready for washing off sandy feet. Then suit off (while rinsing feet) - went very smooth. Next towel off feet and roll on socks, then slip on shoes. Helmet on, grab bike and start running. Clipped in one foot - other was sticky. Right foot slipped, lost balance, crashed. Cut my knee and ankle - not bad though. Got back up and kept pedaling. Had to stop 1/4 mile down the road to adjust crooked headset and wash cut out with water bottle. Then I was good to go. What would you do differently?: Faster up the beach and out of the suit, take time clipping cleats into pedals. Relax my breathing a bit coming out of the water. ![]() Bike
Comments: Could have probably pushed myself harder on the hills to keep up speed. Made good time up on the downhills and flats, but spent too much time climbing. What would you do differently?: Climb out of the saddle a bit, keep cadence up even in higher gears. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Surprised that I have energy left for the run - was worried about this! Transition went very well - very smooth. What would you do differently?: Would grab water and not Gatorade. Needed water to spray on face, hands and down back, and the sweet Melon Gatorade was a little too much for my stomach. ![]() Run
Comments: First 100 to 200 yards really felt that breathing wasn't comfortable. I had been worried about my legs, but they were fine. My neck was really hurting after the bike (an old injury makes it sore to ride that way for very long). Feeling a bit nauseous from the Gatorade. My husband rode past to check on me and I swapped Gatorade for fresh, cool water. After this felt very comfortable. Washed face off and cooled down my back. Felt really good, if starting to get a bit tired. Had to walk for 15 seconds twice on steep hills. What would you do differently?: Remember my race belt (really should have worn this all three legs). Bring water, not Gatorade with me. Relax my breathing. Run all the way. Do speed work more often. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Walked around, caught my breath, drank water and Gatorade. Smiled and reviewed splits with Jesse. Felt very pleased with myself. Realized I probably could have gone faster. What limited your ability to perform faster: Could have used more GU on the bike. Fear of not having energy for the run, I dialed back the ride probably more than I should have. Arms tired from swim and bike - felt a bit sluggish in my upper body during the run. Event comments: Feeling excited about upcoming "real" races, now knowing that I can not only finish, but finish in the time range that I had in mind. Need to work on breathing, some strength work in biceps/triceps and hamstrings. Feeling confident about duration, but I need to work on speed to get to where I want to be. Really glad I did this mock tri as practice; special thanks to my husband/coach. He made this day go very smoothly and kept my speed and spirits up. Last updated: 2005-07-17 12:00 AM

Made a list for myself the night before, to make sure that I had packed everything. Checking off the list made me relax about getting things in order. Set up transition areas: T1 was in the parking lot at the park, in the bed of my husband's pickup truck. T2 was in my garage, just down the street. Mentally, I prepared but saying, "slow is smooth and smooth is fast." Eliminated butterflies by focusing on deep breathing and knowing that this wasn't a "real race," although my goal was to go as fast as possible.
Walked around in the water a bit, stretched, jogged a bit to get warmed up.
