My wife has a history of diabetes on both her mom's side of the family and her dad's side.  She is very concerned about developing it.

She is a couch potato, overweight, high cholestrol, but eats a pretty balanced diet "most of the time".  She is under a lot of stress, mostly self induced.

I've been fortunate not to have it in my family history.  Because of that,  I don't really know anything about diabetes.  I've seen it mentioned on this website from time to time, so what kinds of things can she do to help avoid developing diabetes?

Drop the excess weight. Eat healthy. Minimize sugar intake. Exercise.

Diabetes.org is an excellent resource.

My father has adult onset diabetes and it was entirely preventable. He has a whole host of diabetes related afflictions.

My mother in law has adult onset diabetes. She is quite overweight and thinks vegetables are for people who are poor. She eats only fried foods. If possible have her do some exercise. Start out slow and easy doing stuff she likes.

I had it. Was taking 2000 mgs of Glucophage a day.
Diet, excercise, lost nearly 60 lbs, and started tri training.
Result. No diabetes. no hypertension, low chloresterol.
Bottom line is that diet and exercise did what no medicine could do.
Get her motivated.

Wow, gullahcracker, I had no idea that someone could actually recover from diabetes. That is an amazing accomplishment!
