Swim
Comments: Swim went great. I was way ahead of my expected time. What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: Must've swam too fast because when I got out of the pool I was light headed but kept going. Since the swim was inside I set up two mini transition areas - first one was right next to the pool indoors where i quickly dried off and threw on clothes grabbed my helmet and I was off to the bike. The drastic change from inside a humid YMCA pool area to outside 45 degrees 20 mph winds and rainy was not pleasant. While running to the bike I put my helmet on. At the bike I strapped on my shoes (hard sole cycling road shoes which you can't really run in and is why I waited to put them on) and was off. Because they skipped our pre-race meeting I wasn't sure where I could jump on my bike but no one yelled at me so it must've been okay. Trouble clipping but then I was off. What would you do differently?: Practice flying starts and clipping in Bike
Comments: Out and back and I'm glad the first half was into the wind. The 20mph wind (gusts up to 35) for the first 5 miles was hard going but I tucked down and got into a decent rhythm and grinded away. Get to the turn around open the sails and fly. There's nothing like riding with a strong tailwind. I almost wiped out once trying to cage my water bottle which was the only negative thing about the ride What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 2
Comments: See my wife who is cheering me on which was very encouraging. Rack bike, helmet off, cycling shoes off, running shoes on and off What would you do differently?: Unstrap shoes while on bike Run
Comments: 75% of the way through the run 3 people pass me within 50 meters of each other which was very discouraging. I tried to amp it up but they kept pulling way. What would you do differently?: Practice more bricks in all weather, build up more endurance Post race
Warm down: Grab gatorade, apple and banana and go into pool area to warm up. What limited your ability to perform faster: Weather, experience Event comments: Good first race. My wife kept wanting to leave but I wanted to stick around for the awards ceremony for some reason. Turned out I got second in my division which surprised me and also hooked me on the sport of triathlon. Last updated: 2011-04-20 12:00 AM

This was my first triathlon so I didn't have much of a pre-race routine. The event was 2 1/2 hrs away from home so my wife and I drove up the night before and stayed at a friends house. Sleeping on a new bed wasn't ideal but it was better than the floor or couch. Very anxious so I didn't sleep the best but I forced myself to relax in bed until about 5:00am (which is normal). Had a frosted strawberry pop tart, banana and gatorade. Got in a good 20 minutes of stretching. Then I go outside. Rainy, overcast, windy and cold. Two days prior it was 80 but this morning it was 42. Went online and discovered it was only going to get colder from there. They had the start time as 7:30am so I got there at 6:45 aired up the tires, racked my bike and got marked up. Laid out my transition area and then I waited. I got myself aquainted with the area and talked with other entrants. They had staggered starts and found out I was in group 7 of 8 so now I had to wait longer. They actually skipped my groups meeting but luckily I eavesdropped on others.
Not much of a warm up mainly because it was so cold. Checked and double checked tranistion area and went over the transitions in my head.
