Subject: tri on wheels?

I have MS and wiil be wheeled (handcycle and wheelchair) when I do an event.  I really want to start training for triathlons but I don't know where to get my equipment (handcycle and racing wheelchair) or how to even start training.  Can someone tell me how to research this?  I'd like to do the SM tri 2012.  Posted here because I live in Overland Park

Thanks,

Stacy

Welcome Stacy! I did a quick search and found some hand cycles on Ebay. Hopefully someone on here can be of more help than I and get you pointed in the right direction. I just got started this season but am loving it. I have heard good things about the SM Tri and plan to be there next year as well. Good luck!

Welcome.  I wish I had something else to offer, but if no one around here is any help, I would suggest going to a local race; either a tri or even a 5k.  There are usually quite a few athletes competing with handcycles and racing wheelchairs.  I would just chat them up.  You will find most of us love to talk about the sport to anyone who will listen.  Sorry I couldnt be more help.  Good luck, and keep us updated on your progress.

Welcome to BT Stacy,

I too wish I knew where to guide you.  I would second the motion of going to a local tri and check it out.  Next month on the 21st is the Jackson County Tri at Longview Lake, Lees Summit.  Last year there was at least one hand cycle guy there, he was quite impressive I doubt that was his first Tri, maybe he'll be back this year.  Last year there were around 435 people in the sprint, I think an equal amount in the Oly distance so probably a good chance for a view hand cyclists being there.  I'll try to keep you in mind at the next couple of races, maybe I can report some info back to you.  I swim with a couple Tri folks, I'll ask them next time I see 'em.

Happy Training

Stacy you should go to a local bike shop that also specializes in tri equipment. I'm not from the KC area but have heard alot of people talk about Epic. Most of the people that work at the LBS are really friendly and eager to help out. They may even know of some people that are competing with hand cycles and racing wheelchairs.
