Run
Comments: PROS: I was on track for goal time of 1:46 under approx mile 9. Ran first 8 miles very close to goal. Actually started a race in a controlled pace for the first time ever. CONS: I think I ignored the effect of the wind - 10 to 12 mph headwind miles 1-4 and 8-11. Also think I should have shed arm warmers in tunnel as I felt I heated up a bit too much in the uphill section of the tunnel. I think the aforementioned facts limited my ability to maintain pace in last third of run. Mile - Pace - HR - Tgt Pace 1 - 8:34 - 170 - 8:45 2 - 8:19 - 176 - 8:30 3 - 8:23 - 180 - 8:30 4 - 8:10 - 177 - 8:15 5 - 8:00 - 179 - 8:00 6 - 7:50 - 181 - 8:00 7 - 7:50 - 181 - 8:00 8 - 8:11 - 178 - 8:30 9 - 8:56 - 180 - 8:00 10 - 8:42 - 179 - 7:45 11 - 8:45 - 177 - 7:45 12 - 9:05 - 173 - 7:45 13 - 8:39 - 176 - 7:30 .31 - 8:04 - 176 - 7:30 What would you do differently?: Run the race that the conditions give me. I should have dialed my pace back some in the head winds. Overall I was in the top 18% of my age group and top 20% in overall men. Top 10% in overall race. Personal best for the race is top 19% in age group, top 20% in men and top 12% overall. I think given the conditions I had a very good run for myself. I simply made it harder than it should have been by ignoring the conditions (wind). Post race
Warm down: Got first post race massage...not sure if it helped any. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I needed to do more speedwork. I was lmited in amount of speedwork I was able to do from knee injury throughout summer. I felt that contributed to not being able to maintain pace in last few miles. Woke up at 4:15. Brewed a bit of coffee, had a nutrigrain waffle with peanut butter, made up an electrolyte bottle to sip pre-race, and made up my recovery bottle for post race. Picked up my bro-in-law and drove downtown to race.
Got in the corral about 5 before start. Got MP3 player cued up, stretched a bit, let out a couple of primal "yeahs" and off we went.
