Angels Race
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 25m 27s
Overall Rank = 206/400
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 20/32
Pre-race routine:

I got there a little too late. I also set up in the transition area way too close to the deadline for us to get out of there.
Event warmup:

Jogged about 1/2 mile and then stretched upper and lower body.
Swim
  • 08m 56s
  • 300 yards
  • 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Since it was my first race, it was just used for experience. I last about 10 breathing well, then I pretty much had my head above water for almost the entire rest of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Train, train, train...in the pool, 4x a week. I need to increase both my endurace, as well as my breathing. To this point, I have been concentrating too much on my breathing and not enough on my endurance, which can be improved even while I am still learning how to breath.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

I thought I did pretty good since it was my first time. I only had to worry about tying my shoes, putting my shirt on, and jumping on my bike. The only problem I had was getting my shoes into my clipless pedal clamps.
What would you do differently?:

Change to bike shoes with clips.
Bike
  • 47m 11s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 15.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Next time, I believe I can go a lot harder. I do feel I was close to my 100% effort level. I did not know how to pace myself, since I have never raced on a bike before.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder; drive the course the previous day so I will know it.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

I believe I performed this stage very well. I did not have to change my shoes, so it made it easier.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 29m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 26s  min/mile
Comments:

I kept a very steady pace, even tho' it was slow. I do not believe I could have gone any faster. I was happy with how strong I finished, considering.
What would you do differently?:

Drive the course the previous day and learn the mile markers. Then use my watch to keep track of my pace.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around a lot, ate bananas and bagels, and drank both water and gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My very poor swimming performance.

Event comments:

This was my first ever triathlon. I knew I wasn't ready for the swimming part. But I wanted to do it anyway to get an idea of what a triathlon feels like overall. Even though I know that my swimming needs major improvement, I was very happy overall with how I performed. My effort was great, as was my preparation. I plan on training all winter long for the Spring, especially swimming.
