Set-up, Inc

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 53m 26s
Overall Rank = 95/336
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 6/20
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 0530, downed a few cups of water, and woofed down a banana. Had one Hammer gel right before the start.
Event warmup:

None and the first mistake of the day. It was in the 40/50s prior to the race start so I just wanted to stay cozy in my wetsuit. I should have warmed up in the 62 degree water to prevent the initial cold water shock.
Swim
  • 16m 59s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

The water was freezing after all the rain we had the week before the race. After the start, I ran in to the water and attempted to get into my freestyle stoke. However, the water was so cold that every time I stuck my face in the water it literally took my breath away. I ended up breast stroking the first 250 yards or so. After about 250 yards my face got numb and I was able to get into my stroke and make up some time.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up to prevent the intital shock of hitting that cold water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 9s
Comments:

I had difficulty getting one foot out of suit. I don't think it cost more than a few seconds though.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 1h 05m 24s
  • 19 miles
  • 17.43 mile/hr
Comments:

I was holding on to a ~20mph average until the few hills at the end. I obviously had some difficulty with those bringing my average down. The hill at the end was about .66 miles and fairly steep. I averagede about 8mph the whole way up. Really sad.
What would you do differently?:

Find some hills to train on.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Not a bad transition.
What would you do differently?:

Have to practice shoes off on bike before next season.
Run
  • 27m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Calves were near cramping off the bike and that on top all the roots on the trail run made for a slow first mile. 2 mile was mostly along a flat road and I got in my 7:40 mile pace. 3rd mile included 'the hill' and it was all I could do to put one foot in front of the other. I got passed by a few folks on this segment.
What would you do differently?:

Hill training.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No hill training proved to be a real factor in this one. I plan to work on bike strength and run endurance over the off season. That should help next year.

Event comments:

Race morning package pick-up resulted in a late swim start. No complaints because it allowed the sun to warm things up a bit. Police and volunteers that directed the course were great. Needed more drinks on the run.

Great race. It seemed like you had a good race even with the problem with the cold water. You still finished in the top third of the swim times. I'll have to pencil this race in for next year.
