Subject: Some cheese with my Whine???
Hi all.
My turn to whine. Last Friday I crashed on my bike. No...it wasn't feet not able to come out of toe clips (I have the other kind, cages?) I hit some loose chunky gravel along my favorite river ride, at a spot where they put two very large rocks close together so that you can"t drive a car through ( and bearly a bike!!!). So...turn and break and kerplop, over I go on my right side, hands out to break my fall...on the gravel. Damage survey: cut and bruised right AND left heels of hands, right AND left shoulders jarred, right shoulder bruised, and a humungous bruise and swelling on right hip the size of the salad plate!!! This is Tuesday and it hasn't even showed signs of starting to turn yellow yet!!!
Oh, and top off my weekend, I just learned that my ONE AND ONLY POOL will be closing on June 2nd. Next closest pool is a 2 1/2 hour drive away. Now, I really need to buy my wetsuit and start river/ocean swimming a good 3 months before planned.
Oh, and there is now a big, and I mean big, bear, judging by the size of his/hers? doodoo pile, now crossing my bike/run path along my favorite river ( the one I plan to swim in). Haven't seen him yet!!!
I do love training!!!!!
Oh, yah....but the good part is, oh yes, there is a good part.... I've lost 50 pounds, can run for an hour (did that on Mother's day, even with the sore hip), and I can swim 400M without drowning!!!

Thanks for being here and listening.

Darlene

You just keep whine'in as long as you keep it up. Don't worry about the bear, they usually go to bed after daybreak. Happened to see one while training last year. After I realized it wasn't a black lab, I did a quick u-turn and ran back to the beginning of the trail. By that time it was light and figured it was safe to u-turn again and finish my run!!!!! Almost peed in my pants that day

But seriously, if you can't whine to us who can you whine to?

Darlene--

All sympathies (and I mean that!), BUT if you don't get back on that bedamned horse, we'll come and find you and put you there!!

Having just had my initiation into the bike accident world (not that embarrassing, but relatively harmless clipless pedal plunck--but the big kahuna), I remember the bruises the size of salad plates well.

By all means grab yourself some whine--I'd advise some wine, too--and rest on your non-salad plate sized laurels!!

:-)

Ellen, Evelyn, Roy, and Dana...thanks for hearing my crys of pain!!! I took the next day off and then ran for an hour on Mother's day to earn my big buffet lunch (I skipped the dessert buffet and had another helping of salad and ham). I got back on the bike yesterday and felt ok (got off and walked through the part where I fell). Ran 4K today with a little bit of pain. So not to worry Dana, I'm not letting this keep me from getting back up and riding . YEEE HAAAAA!!!

Thanks a bunch!!!

Darlene

Hey - absolutely some wine and cheese and if they import the stuff where you are - some San Francisco Sourdough bread is good.  I grew up in Northern Ontario - the bear ate out of our garbage cans at night!  They won't eat you unless they are really starving - was it a skinny bear do you think?  Probably fine if you ran into a bear pile

Yep -- that's another way for a bike crash --- gravel!

Glad you are OK and you should definitely enjoy the cheese!

I would think that the bear would make a pretty good pace setting partner for your runs................as long as your in the lead
perhaps a bell like they use in backpacking back country could be of some help. I dont have bears to be concerned about here in the boston area but these damn cars are plenty scary especially in clipless crashes.....(two to date)..........good luck and good training

Thankyou all.....after a week of pain, swelling and very dark bruising, I decided I should finally go see a doctor. I actually went to emergency at 7 in the morning in Victoria where I was visiting a friend. (6 hour drive from home). I was still running every morning, and well, just finally freaked myself out because the pain was getting worse instead of better. The doctor said it was one of the best crash bruises he'd seen in a long time, ask me what tri I was training for, and said I was fine to go!!!! So, I was OK. My only question: could I keep training?? Yup, you betcha, he says!!! I just got some cool looking road tires for my mountain bike, so I can hardly wait to see how much time I gain on my regular route!!!!
You guys and gals are GREAT!!!

Hi dolly,

How are those tires on the bike after all it has been a day since your last co opps, different job.

Take care on the gravel with the road type tires.

Have a great ride.

Hey Roy,
I am excited to report that my newly installed road tires have saved me 10-13 minutes on my 20K ride! Whoo Hoo!!! The difference in feel on the road is quite amazing too-- kinda like riding on glass instead of gravel. My hubby warned me to be very careful on the gravel, so I have been VERY careful, and actually avoiding the gravel trail along the river, opting for a steep hill home along the highway.

Now, if I can just figure out a way to warm the ocean up, I'll be stylin' with regards to my open water swimming!!!

Have fun training, I hope you guys don't get any more snow this time of year!!!

Cheers,
Darlene
