Subject: Frustrating experience w/ MCI

Last month I received a collect call.  I could not hear the person's name but he said was calling from the hospital so I accepted the call.  When the call was connected it turned out that the gentlemen dialed the wrong number.  I immediately called the Operator and she said that when I received the bill I could call MCI and they would credit me for the call.

So, I received the bill last week.  I was charged $5.73 for the call!  I had no idea that collect calls were that much.  Anyway, I called MCI and was told that I need to call a different number during business hours.  After speaking to a few people at MCI and e-mailing Customer Service, it appears that MCI's stance is that since I accepted the call I will have to pay for it.  I guess I can kind of understand that they need to have a specific policy regarding collect calls but I accepted the call based on the assumption that I knew the person calling.  It seems to me that they could make an exception in this case or at least take the time to assess the situation.

Part of my frustration is that I am dealing with people in India regarding this issue.  I attempted to communicate with Suji, Raghunathan, Suvarna and Lakshmi.  There have been problems due to the language barrier.  That may have nothing to do with it but it has added to my frustration.

Two questions:
(1) If you received a collect call from someone at the hospital, would you answer it?
(2) Do you think I should have received a credit for the $5.73?

I have decided just to pay the darn thing but I was interested in what others think.  Am I wrong?  Am I over-reacting?

To make an exception "just this once" would really add up to the phone company. Think of how many calls like this they get in a day.

If I had known it was from a hospital I would have accepted the call also, knowing it was collect, and knowing I would pay for it. A little bugged that it was a wrong number but you have piece of mind.

I wouldn't expect MCI to credit me for it, would be nice, but I wouldn't expect it.

I understand about the outsourcing frustration, I had the same problem with Dell. However, when I called on the weekend I got a nice lady from Texas!

You are probably right.  I guess I would feel better about paying it if I felt like they actually listened and at least gave it a little consideration before saying they were sorry but they could not provide the credit.  They did neither - no cosideration and no apology.  And I think it added fuel to the fire having to deal with people in India.  I have had some really bad experiences with "technical" support in India for my Dell laptop.

I guess I should just let it go!

The thing that would annoy me would be that their operator told you you'd get a credit for the call. Otherwise, I wouldn't expect it, but if their company's representative told me to expect it, I would. I hate inconsistency.

Funny story, when I was in high school and finished with whatever athletic practice, a pay phone was the only way I had to call my mom to pick me up. So I'd call 1-800-Collect and when they asked for my name, I'd say, "MomitsmeI'mdonecomepickmeup." She'd deny the charges and come get me. Ah, the days before cell phones (not that I have one now)....

hehehe...  we did that in college.  My friend from another state called me collect and spoke in Chinese "don't accept, just call me back".

Turned out he was broke but needed to talk with me.

The last time I had an issue with MCIs billing I couldnt seem to get through to a real person. It irked me so badly I called another company and promptly switced long distance service. MCI eventually called me to ask why I switched I gave them an ear full about how I couldn't - ever - get through to a real customer service agent. They lost my service because they promised me a specific long distance plan, but my bill proved to show otherwise.

Well I'll admit that about 10 years ago, I worked for MCI. The truth is that they have the ability to look at your past records, determine that this isn't a common thing and write it off. That is what should have happened. They do have to be careful though because people will use this scam all the time to shout out something to someone i.e. It's a boy and hang up. So there really is no way to confirm whether or not you are telling the truth. Fact is people try to get out of all sorts of legitimate charges. I would probably fight this one especially if this never happens or you don't normally get collect calls. Like I said I know for a fact they can review your records.
