Subject: 2011 Cannondale Slice 5

I'm about to purchase a 2011 Cannondale Slice 5 for $1300 (regular $1,800) from a local bike shop.  I was looking for a $2000 beginner bike and had four I was considering, mostly from reading reviews.  All 2011 models because I'm cheap that way!

Top four:

Felt B16, S22, Trek SC 2.5, Cervelo P2 (in no specific order)

Fifth and sixth place:

Cannondale Slice 5, QuintanaRoo Seduza

The only reason I have Cannondale Slice 5 at number 5 and not in the top four was because of the Shimano 105 set.  BUT, with the $500 saving I figure I can ride 105's for a year or two then upgrade later to Ultra's or something else.  That's relying on the carbon Slice 5 frame being as good as I've heard about in my research.

Note: This is my first road bike other than a Trek 7.1fx.

My questions:  Is the carbon frame of the Slice 5 as good as some of the reviews out there?  Anyone been riding this bike for a while with some back ground experience to go on?  Does this sounds like a good plan?

Have you considered the Slice 4 with the Sram Rival components?  On sale now because it's a 2011 you could get one for about $2100 and save yourself having to upgrade components later on.  Just a thought, carry on...

just my .02

$1300 sounds like a steal.

I was also looking at the slice and the B16. I went with the B16 because of the price I got (which was more than $1300)

Nothing wrong with 105's. I would keep the 105's and invest in a TT helmet and some race wheels down the road, much more bang for your buck than upgrading to Ultegra group.

Forgot to mention $1300 is only a good deal if it fits properly.

Thanks!  And yes, fitting tomorrow.  Either a new bike or back to the drawing board.

the slice is an excellent frame and that's a great price.  they're on sale since the 2012's will be a different design, but people love them.  The only concern I'd have about the Slice is the very short reach.  If you're a shorter torsoed (or longer legged) person, then Slice away.  but if you fit on a slice, you won't fit on a Felt B16, Cervelo P2... or vice versa.

Nothing wrong with the bike tho- or 105.  If the 105 bothers you, you can always pick up parts slightly used dirt cheap.  An RD is pretty easy to swap out with an ultegra.  Heck, I picked up a near new Dura Ace RD of this or Slowtwitch's classifieds (I forget) a couple months ago for $35.  It won't make you any faster.  A slightly different feel at best.
