Who's working out with a TRX. What kind of workouts are you doing? I have been working out with the TRX for two months now with each workout a little different (like cross fit) and looking to see what others are doing to keep the variety.

Todays work out was three rotations of the following;

Single Leg Squat
Y and T
Pike
2-min jump rope

Suspended Lunge
Atomic push-up
Plank
2-minute jump ripe

Side Lunge
Row
Roll Out
2-min jump rope

Hamstring press
Pull-up
Oblique crunch
2-min jump rope

That's a pretty solid workout.  We do similar styled workouts on aerobic days.

An example:

Set of 5 or 6 easier dynamic stretching / warmup exercises

3 times through of 45 seconds on 15 off on the TRX...1 minute on cardio.

  • Sprinter's Start
  • Swimmer's Pull
  • Hip Drop
  • Plyo Ladder

Next

  • TRX Bicycle
  • Inverted Press
  • Pendulum
  • Carioca

Next

  • Single Leg Squat
  • Tricep Press
  • Side Plank w/ reach through
  • 30sec Cross Country Skiier, 30sec Downhill Skiier

Cool Down and stretch a bit

Should be a  nice ~45 min workout

I'll have to give your guys workouts a try.  I am a bit more boring with mine as I am doing the express workout dvd still.  I just don't have time to break down a good workout.  I hit off season in July though and plan to create some plans for myself.

I just did an intro session on TRX at my gym- how do you all like it?  It doesn't get the same love here that say CrossFit or P90X gets, but it seems like it would be a great workout and good for core and stabilization.  Do you do only TRX, or do you mix in other strength training?  And how do you learn the moves?

Thanks for the info.

I do other strength training too, but find that the Tri gives me a great workout and I believe it has kept me injury free too. Other strength is some kettle bell work and two short wo's of weights that i do during the winter months only. The video that comes with the trx is very good, so is their web site. YouTube has some great videos too.

Still using mine. Been using it for the last two years, still enjoy the workouts, find them challenging and have stayed injury free. I have started using kettle bells the past month too.

Being the cheapskate I am, I followed one of the "make your own" youtube vids and have been loving it, for a total of about $25.  I've been dealing with a minor medical issue for the last week or so (completely unrelated) but am looking forward to hitting it hard once I'm cleared.

I made mine with my daughters' old jungle gym rings.  Attached them to the ceiling in the basement.  Works great.  $10.  And my daughters still come down and swing on them.  Hours of entertainment.  Thanks for the workout ideas!

My Tri Club is starting up a new class in January that I thought some of you TRX lovers might like.  It's called "30/30" and consists of 30 min of spinning + 30 min of strength training with TRX.  Its an 8 week program and classes are on Wednesday nights.  The studio is in Midtown West in Manhattan.  For more info, click here:  http://empiretriclub.com/winter-training-programs/

Chris Mosier is leading the class who is a TRX sponsored athlete and Ironman Triathlete.  I think this will be a great combination of cardio and strength.  I've been incorporating TRX into some of my training, but look forward to taking a class lead by a coach who can show me new things!

I wish they had a "Spreader bar" for the TRX.  When I do pushups on the TRX, the buckles rub my arms quite a bit.

If the straps are scraping your arms, then you're not doing them correctly.  Using something like a "spreader bar" would negate some of the benefits of using the TRX system.

TRX training can strengthen and tone your muscles. This is not significantly different than other forms of resistance training but it is a current fad.

The TRX is definitely pricey. You can get some gymnastics rings for around $40 and get the same benefits. Or make your own as someone suggested.

I don't think this type of workout is necessarily a fad as it is, in essence, based on gymnastics rings which have been around for years. The fitness community is just now realizing the value of this type of training over the machines that have invaded gyms.

It is like rings except the fact that you can use your feet in them...opens up a lot of possibilities. Uuugghh, I'm starting back up training since having not done much of anything besides a bit of jogging since Oct. TRX hurt... (pushup, Mtn climber, pull through)x3 (chest fly, sl squat, back extension) x3 (deep row, oblique crunch, side plank w/side pike reach unders) x3. Reps varied by exercise. Not the best put together workout, but I wanted to do a lot of stuff on the ground.I do think the TRX is a fad...and possibly on the way out (I'm a certified group instructor.). But for the kind of strength training that I (and a lot of triathletes) find useful to supplement my SBR, it is perfect. It costs less than decking out a home gym.

Thanks for all the suggested TRX excercises! There is one I use at the gym on campus and I'm becoming quite fond of it. After some lifting it breaks up my workouts quite a bit.

However, I really dont' know what most of these TRX variations look like. Could someone please give me a link or two to some youtube videos or diagrams or the like so I can get some ideas of what they look like and how to do them correctly?

Much apprecitated. Trying to build up some overall strength for Tri's and upper body strength for Tough Mudder and such.

Thanks.

Alex

Have you checked out the official TRX youtube?  http://www.youtube.com/user/TRXtraining?feature=pvchclk

Some of the non-official TRX videos you'll find by others contain some pretty sketchy technique.

I don't like the jungle gym straps as much  Because they anchor independently, they allow sloppier form.  The TRX straps are really 1 long strap that loops through another loop, so you need to maintain even pressure on both ends to keep the strap from sawing.

The handles/stirrups on the jungle gym straps are nice, though.
