Subject: Do people really ride with no bar tape/grips

From looking at peoples pictures of bikes I see people with no bar tape or grips from time to time, bullhorn and extensions. I would think this would be somewhat dangerous with sweaty/wet hands. Do people really ride like this?

I know some bars had a grip type tape that is hard to see, and zip has thin pads on the vuka bull i think it is, but I see others that appear to have nothing.

Been on one bilionty training rides and bunches of races, wandered the transition areas, and I've never seen a single bike without bar tape. Even track bikes use tape or grips. Where did you see those pictures?

Can't imagine slick aluminum or carbon would be safe at all...

I have seen it from time to time in some odd circumstances, once on a group ride, I had just changed cables and hadn't re-wrapped the bars yet...for several days in fact. Just one of those things. I wasn't too bad with gloves

Agreed. I see this all the time with WillyB boys riding fixies. Other than that, no way.

There are a ton of people and prod who don't use tape including Chris Lieto.  I never understood it myself but if they like it that is all that matters to me.

I see lots of bikes that have no tape on the aero extensions. This does not strike me as particularly unsafe, I just rest my hands on top of the extensions and rarely actually grip them anyway. Most often my fingers are intertwined in a prayer like position in front of my water bottle.

I don't see very many bikes with out tape on the bull horns. I would certainly never do it, I would be afraid that my hands would slip right off the if I hit the brakes.

I don't use anything on my extentions. They are quite comfy and I never slip. But then I can also ride without actually using my hands. All my weight is on the seat with a little bit on my elbows on the pads.

Do people actually need to death grip their extensions?

your roads must be smoother than mine.

I would be curious to know whether you have ever used tape and have a preference or not?

My friend has no tape on his P3.  Just because he is broke and it has come off.

Do people really ride with no bar tape? The answer is obviously yes - if people don't take medicine, people definitely ride without bar tape. people do a lot of crazy (and stupid) things.
