Subject: 910xt and no flip turns

I am looking for a reason to buy the 310xt instead of the 910xt.

In my Mentor Group someone had an issue with lap counting and his 910xt.  It counted some extra laps during turns. He figured it was from the lack of flip turns.

Does anyone else have this problem?  I do not flip turn and have no intention of doing so ever.  If this is a universal problem then my decision is made and I get the 310xt.

Thoughts?

I haven't seen that problem with mine, but I'd be happy if my watch did a couple extra laps for me! 

I'd probably believe the watch over my lap counting anyways.

I don't flip turn and haven't had any issues with my 910xt, I have owned it a week and in 4 pools swims it has counted every lap

I also have not had any extra laps added, and I don't do flip turns. I have had an extra lap added when hit the 'lap' button for a rest period, and the watch didn't realize I had stopped so it counted my rest interval as one 25 yard interval, instead of a non swimming rest interval. I think there is a slight learning curve to make sure watch is on the same page as you, but I would not say you have to 'finesse' it or anything like that.

I do flip turns and sometimes it counts extra laps.  So much for that theory.  Note, I still have to count laps in my head.  I still need to know when my set is done and I am not going to look at the watch after every lap.  If I lose count it is good but the 910xt pool feature IMO is better for analysis then keeping track of laps, assuming your going out there and straight swimming but following a plan.

x2 on all of this.  I have experimented.  I do flip turns and occasionally it will add a lap.  I tried with open turns and the same thing.  The analysis tool of the 910xt is what makes this watch worth it.

Mine is counting extra laps every swim. I must be doing something odd. It got 2400 yesterday when I swam 2000. That's been fairly typical lately. I'm going to work with it to see if I can find a pattern.

Does it keep track by the distanced based on the GPS, or based on the direction change at the end of the lap?

If its GPS based distance, it would have to be pretty accurate to swim 2000yrds to give a good count.

There are two modes, open water swim and pool swim. The pool option yardage is based on direction change (you choose the pool length). It uses the built-in accelerometer, like in an iPhone. The accelerometer is used in open water swimming for stroke count and stroke type.

If you figure out the pattern let me know.   The way I swim I am not surprised it messes up from time to time.  Most of my sets its pretty dead on but some of them just get rather random additions or subtractions.

The finis swimsense watch notes that you need to be "crisp" when you com eoff the walls, whether flip or open. It senses a change in direction. So sometimes it would drop a lap if I came into a wall on an even vs. odd number of strokes, or if I led off a length with my left rather than right arm strokign first.

I had to wear it only on my right wrist and every single turn had to be an accelerated push off the way.

It frequently did not even recognize my breaststroke som my IM's would be a 50, a rest and a 25. Sometimes it read my fly as free.

I sold it after 5 uses.

Not sure if that helps. Try switching wrists maybe.

Actually what happened is that it showed length of 25 yards but it missed my turn to the 25 yards took twice as long (including strokes, etc).  It was easy to spot when I downloaded the data.  Did it twice so I ended up swimming extra and didn't notice what happened.  I am thinking now the issue was that I stopped for a second to look at the distance (actually took me a few seconds to clear goggles and focus) and then reversed directions.  Thinking that was that caused it to not register the turn.

I just updated the firmware so maybe its been fixed.
