Cozumel, Mexico (CZM)
Subject: First Sprint Tri this weekend!

Hello everyone!  Just want to introduce myself and thank all of you who contribute here for the wealth of information I gleam everyday here (although this is my first post).

I live in Cozumel, MX and have been training here since February and love every minute of it!  I went from being an indoor cardio queen, swearing I would never be a runner - to someone that you have to drag inside for a workout (vs. being outside running or on my bike riding along the Caribbean ocean!)  I GET that "runners high" thing now!!!!!  I really GET it!  haha!

I am still learning how to use the site and have just signed up for the Silver program and selected a training program for my next phase.

I competed in and finished my first cycling race (60k) last weekend and will be competing in my first TRI this weekend, on Mothers Day in Playa del Carmen, MX.  It's a sprint and as ready as I feel for it (swim is my weakest event), the race nerves have set in - including the race nightmares!

  • I finish my swim to find out that EVERYONE has FINISHED the ENTIRE triathlon!
  • The race organizers decide to add a rock climbing wall after the run - as a "surprise"
  • I can't find my bike after the swim
  • I can't find my transition bag, I've forgotten my transition bags, etc.   Haha!

I am also registered for and training for the 70.3 here in Cozumel on September 23!   I know it's a big step, but I am determined and motivated to do it and have an excellent support system here as well as several of our own local Ironmen and Women supporting me and guiding me.

I am excited for this new journey and look forward to reading about everyone else's successes, advice, tips, strategies, etc.

Thanks again for all of the info here!  Have an excellent season everyone!

Welcome to posting here and to triathlon! Have a BLAST at your race this weekend ... heck, even if a rock climbing wall suddenly materializes, if you're out there to have FUN and give it your best shot, you will absolutely meet your goals and be making the most of your first tri experience.

Hi and welcome!  Nope, I've never seen a rock climbing wall at the end of the run (yet!) Smile, but then often the run seems like a vertible mountain to me (I'm still waiting for that runners-high as I only get a swimmers/bikers-high)!  I'm positive that no-one will have finished the entire triathlon before you get out of the water!  I'm also sure you'll do great and have a lots and lots of fun.

My wee bit of advise is to plan and pack up your transition bag a couple of nights before and that helps calm the nerves as you realise you've got everything organised and sorted (and it gives you time to buy stuff, if you've forgotten anything, without going into pure panic mode!!!!).

If you don't sleep the night before the race (I know I didn't - a mix of nerves and lingering bronchitis), it's really no biggie because pure adrenaline is a truly wonderful thing and it will keep you going!

When you get to the transition area on race day, feel free to ask questions about setup/gear layout/where to get body marked/chip wearing etc as everyone is incredibly helpful this way.  Finding your bike after the swim, I just count the number of bike rows from the "Swim in" area and I haven't been wrong so far.  I've seen people tie a brightly coloured ribbon on the end of their bike row, which I think is a great idea, use balloons (although I've heard stories of them being removed and placed elsewhere by mistake).  I've even seen a triathlete grab the wrong bike in Ironman Arizona, which was identical but had the wrong bike cleats so they couldn't clip in.

Good luck with your racing and have fun!
