Pre-race routine:

Wasn't too much prep to be done as I'd already put my race number onto my race belt and knew what running outfit to wear (I had bought a Race For Life running top from the charity website). So I got up, had a bowl of cereal and some water and got ready. Heading off in the car and realised I had forgot to pick up my iPod shuffle!! Luckily we weren't too far away from home so we turned round and picked it up.
Event warmup:

Met my friends at the event - my friend Becki was running with me and Elaine and my sister Tracy was walking. We arrived an hour before the race start. I did some leg stretches and joined in on the aerobic warm up the two very fit and hunky guys were going through on stage. Also drank plenty of water to make sure I was well hydrated.

Comments:

Becki and I managed to get pretty close to the front, we crossed the start line with 24 seconds already on the clock. My OH had let me borrow his watch so I could get an accurate time using the stop watch feature on it. We began running on the grass which was long so hard to run through especially when all my training had been on Tarmac. Keeping an eye for holes in the grass too was a challenge especially when your also trying to dodge the other women who had decided to join the runners but who, after just 500m where already slowing to a walk!! Becki was doing really well but hadn't done any training for the race so after just under 1K she slowed to a walk and shouted for me to have a good race so I pressed forward. The first 2K I was trying to get my breathing under control cos my chest felt really congested but I pressed on. We turned onto the footpath along the river which is pretty narrow so as people were slowing and stopping, it was difficult to pass them without slowing yourself. During the run I had to stop a couple of times cos my legs just needed a break, but each stop was just for about 10 secs each time. I kept going and saw the '500m to go' sign but was struggling. I'd drank quite a bit of water before the race so really needed to pee at this point!! Also my legs were really weak and now I was running on grass so had to try and pick them up more than on the Tarmac. I slowed to a walk at the second to last corner but my OH had spotted that I was struggling so came along side and started to run with me for encouragement which got me going again. This really spurred me on. I rounded the last corner and saw the finish line. I dug deep and went for it. Picked up my legs and the pace and crossed the finish line........ What an amazing feeling it was to cross the line in a full run!! I collected my race bag, drink and medal and went looking for my OH..... He was soon there to give me massive hugs, kisses and huge congratulations! My finish time of 34.20 wasn't a PB which pi$$ed me off a little but I was just happy to have been able to run it for the first time in 8 years...... And although I beat my friend Becki, she was only 2 mins behind me in the end which was pretty awesome considering she done no prior training, although she has text me this morning (Monday) to say she aching today!! Lol
What would you do differently?:

Really need to work on my stamina but for my first official 5K race I don't think I did too bad....
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of hugs from my OH, a post race ice cream (yum!!) and waiting for my friend Elaine and sister Tracy to finish their walk. I was so ecstatic about finishing that I forgot to stretch which meant that over night and this morning my legs were twitching pretty bad!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of room to pass slower runners. Lack of stamina on my part.

Event comments:

Because its just a 5K charity race they tend not to have water stations around the course but provide you with a bottle of water at the end of the race. I've rated this race as a 5 cos how can you not when you have 4000 women all joined together to raise money to try and kick cancer in the a$$!!
