Subject: Checking References Prior to Calling for Interview?
Just wondering if this is a common practice.
I submitted an application to a company via its website, and was asked me to list three professional references (with email & phone #'s). Over the next couple of days, I got calls from the people I'd listed, saying they received an email from the company asking them to complete a questionnaire about me. About a week after that, I received a call from the company wanting to schedule an interview (for this Monday).

I always thought references were only checked after an interview, once you were either offered the job or were about to be.

Anyone else have this happen?

I've called around before interviewing someone before.  Generally I don't ,but I still know a lot of people in the maritime industry, so if I see candidate come across my desk that comes from the maritime industry I start making calls.  Most of the time I know someone who knows them.

I frequently do this. In the fire/EMS field it tends to be a small world. I not only call references but prior employers and volunteer companies. I like to know a bit about the person before I call them in. Would hate to pick a candidate then find out some shady stuff after I call around

Absolutely and I used to ask for facebook pages as well, and  if they blogged.

This saved me a lot of time and allowed me to eliminate more than a few. Comments about current job/ boss/ fellow employees, and the bosses wife, etc....

I once saw comments about me asking for the information.
