Ipad maps app

I need a crash course in the maps app for the Ipad.  If I want to pick my route to Wisconsin Dells, can I save it?  IF so then can I call it back up on the road without a wifi connection?  I understand I can not get new routes, but will it pull up the saved routes?

I really don't get to touch it, but the wife and daughter have not bothered to figure this one out.
