Subject: What the heck is going on between Japan and China

I've been mostly paying attention to the Middle East and I come across this article.
Chinese General: Prepare for Combat

What the heck.  Does Japan even have a military?  I thought WE provided them with military support/protection.
I'm sure it's probably all just posturing, but I'm curious if anyone else knows what's going on over there.

Oh yeah, and I know nothing about it but of course it's all Obama's fault.  Thank you, Thank you <takes a bow>

Japan has a self-defense force. It is not designed for more than to protect Japan. You are right though, they are not allowed to have a standing military capable of offensive strikes. The U.S. does have military in multiple locations in Japan capable of offensive and defensive roles as well as ballistic missile defense.

This reads like the opening chapters of a Tom Clancy novel.
Actually, I'm kinda sure that this nearly exactly mirrors the plot line of one of his books.

The plot thickens:

Beijing hints at bond attack on Japan

Does anyone find it odd that we have to go to the UK Media to find out anything about this story?

The American connection:

Diplomats say China is calibrating the crisis to probe the strength of US ties with Japan, knowing that alliance fatigue in Washington and the clumsy handling of the dispute by Tokyo has created a rare opportunity.

The Obama administration must navigate a delicate course. A tough line against China risks putting the world’s two superpowers on a collision course: a soft line risks setting off alarm bells in Japan and pushing the country towards rearmament.

Here's one of the more "moderate" (and quick) explanations of the situation

Even though it's been dominating the news here, there's very little in the western press about the situation.

This is just another "thrust" of China's "We're big, you're small, get used to it" diplomacy towards its neighbors.

I live about 3 blocks from the Japanese Embassy and it's basically making it a nightmare to get to work.   But other than that, not too bad.  Some of the roads that have recently been blocked are opening up again.
