Dallas Athletes Racing
35F / 2C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 16m 29s
Overall Rank = 74/614
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 8/45
Pre-race routine:

All I had this morning was a cup of coffee. I decided not to eat anything and run the Sprint on an empty stomach. Double checked my gear bag and laid out warm clothes.
Event warmup:

I didn't warm up and was happy to be in the Natatorium. It was only in the low to mid 30's.
Swim
  • 05m 44s
  • 300 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim started of pretty good and felt nice and easy. I passed two athletes and got stuck behind someone. I tapped her on her feet multiple times and almost had to pull on her ankles to get her to move over. She cost me some valuable time and in a regular snake pool swim I would have been able to pass her but with oncoming swimmers I wasn't able until we hit 200m. I was at least 1 minute slower than what I know I can swim in competition.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I can do different. Its the off season now and I will need to keep my swim endurance up. I will be swimming once or twice a week to keep my base.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Coming out of the Natatorium and running into transition was brutal. As soon as I got to my gear everything felt as if it was wet because it was that cold. I put on my socks and bike shoes and threw a hooded sweatshirt over my tri top. I also put my bike helmet on backwards and was wondering why it didn't fit right ... that cost me a few seconds as my hands were really cold.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transition ...
Bike
  • 40m 33s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.76 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike course was a little longer. I believe my Garmin 910XT showed the course to be about 12.5 miles. I thought I was killing it on the bike but I guess it didn't There were a lot of riders on the course once I got on the 2nd loop. At some points there were way too many athletes and I had to slow down some to make sure not to get a penalty for drafting.
By the time I was done with the 1st loop I couldn't feel my feet anymore. It was still in the thirties and I felt it.
What would you do differently?:

More time on the bike ... trainer rides and the weekly outdoor ride.
Transition 2
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Running in the bike shoes with frozen feet was bad. It felt like I had big rocks hanging on my feet. My fingers were frozen even with the gloves but I decided to leave the gloves in transition and go for the run without the gloves.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I can do different here other than more transition training.
Run
  • 26m 8s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Coming out of transition and starting the run was weird. My feet frozen solid felt like bricks. Once I got half a mile into the run in regained some feeling in my feet. I started to feel some major pain in my toes. I felt like all of my toes were broken and I was still running. It took until I got to the turn around that my feet felt fine. I gave everything on the run and left nothing on the course.
What would you do differently?:

More run specific training in the off season in addition to the bike training.
Post race
Warm down:

I went straight back to transition and took off my sweater and socks and put on dry clothes. I added about 3 layers until I felt cozy warm. There was a warm up but not a warm down ... :-)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Frozen feet ...

Event comments:

As always Dallas Athletes Racing did a great job with the event. Pancakes and hot coffee after the run was awesome. I also really enjoyed the bike jersey that was given to all the finishers. Something different than your usual T-Shirt and socks. The only thing I didn't like was the swim set up but I understand why they are doing it the way they have it set up.

Course: Its an indoor swim but I am not very happy about the layout. You swim down one lane, dive under the ropes and swim back up the second lane but instead of diving under the ropes you swim back in the same lane. It was very hard passing slower swimmers without hitting other athletes in the face coming right at you. I understand its being done to get the athletes in the water faster but I would rather wait a bit.

omg..that girl you were tapping on the feet could've been me! Sorry! I felt someone tapping my feet but wasn't sure what to do..stop swimming and let them go? I couldn't get around the guy in front of me either..I wanted to pass him but there was too much oncoming traffic..So I feel your frustration! I was in the 300's (race number).  Yeah, the cold was brutal.  This is only my 5th race, and the only one I've done that was "cold weather", so I didn't know to bring gloves.  I thought my hands were getting frost bite.  I literally could not feel my hands the whole bike ride, and when I got into transition, a volunteer had to unbuckle my helmet.  I could barely tie my running shoes! Anyway, if it WAS me you couldn't pass..SORRY! Still sounds like you did great..3rd in age group is awesome!

Don't think it was you! :-) I was one of the first 50 people in the water. I was tapping because the person in front of me was swimming almost in the middle without anyone to pass ... I was just trying to get her to move over further to the left. No worries!

This was my first tri. The swim was harder than I expected. All of my swimming is done in an almost empty pool. I gulped some water early which messed up my rhythm, had trouble passing and being passed and struggled through what I thought would be an easy swim.
I didn't hurry through transitions because my goal was just to finish. The bike was tough due to the cold and some hills I wasn't ready for. I felt like I could never get loose on the run. My stride was way shorter than usual and I just couldn't get going.
Overall I had a good time. I thought it was a good event. I know I have work to do, but I can't wait for the next one.

I had the same problem.  I got stuck behind a zig zagger who was much slower than me. My swim time was probable 30 to 40 seconds slower than my training times.  My wife was watching from the stands and she said she saw several passers lock arms at the elbow and have to stop and untangle.

The race was still great despite this and the cold.
