But the biggest cheer was reserved for disabled athlete Marc Herremans – featured in last month’s Gazette – who became only the second wheelchair athlete to complete
Lanzarote Ironman. Marc, paralysed in a bike crash near Haria whilst training for Ironman 2002, got an emotional standing ovation as he came down the home straight in a shade over 14 hours – his target time, which he would’ve easily beaten had it not been for a puncture on the marathon’s second lap.
