It is really sad - I have a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and designed websites for extra cash in 1995/1996.

Now, 16+ years later, I'm starting my own company and have spent about 6 hours today trying to get a simple website up and running.

I bought my URL from godaddy.com, and bought a hosting package.  I spent 3+ hours this morning looking at Wordpress templates and trying to figure out a layout / design I liked.  Finally found one from themeforest.net, and wasted about 45 minutes trying to actually purchase it.  (not a fan of paypal)

After all that failed, ended up just buying a "design package" from godaddy.com.  Which wasted another 30 minutes because it turns out I didn't need a "hosting package" when i bought a "design package."

I swear, it would have been easier to hire a local s/w guy to put this together instead of the 6+ hours I've spent building this site.

Any tips / suggestions for going forward on this?  I have a bare-bones site now loading to go live on the interweb, but will probably upgrade it in a few months when I have more operating income.

I use and like Joomla, easy to use and with the use of plug-ins you can get some really nice features. Also a lot of good templates out there.

My coaching site (linked below) is hosted by godaddy.com. I used one of their builder tools for a while.

I just switched to wordpress this week. I like it a lot better. Still not ideal, but good enough for now.

If I were trying to make coaching my primary source of income, though, I'd definitely fork over some cash to a web designer to have a better looking page made.

I know a good designer that I met here on BT if you ever need one

My parents started up a business and had a website built using wordpress because it was cheap.  My wife, who is a web designer, is doing them a favor and designing something to work for them until the subscription they have already paid for is done, then she's going to take it off there and do something else with it that is less constricting.  With the kits you have to work within the confines of the kit.  More than likely a web designer will "throw away the kit" so to speak and build you a proper website.  So you may want to talk to a designer and get a consultation and see what you're looking for down the line and how much it'd cost to piece meal it out.  You don't want to pay a bunch of money and then have to turn around and pay a bunch of money all over again.

My wife has got 2 projects going right now outside of her real job, but she takes on outside projects here and there and isn't insanely expensive because she does it on her off time (so it takes longer).  If you're interested in a designer I can see if she's willing to do any freelance work (she doesn't always).  I can send you some of her sites before hand, too, if you like.

I ended up hiring a designer/developer to build my site (below)... I wanted something with a little more polish than I could do on my own using Wordpress, etc. (I played around with trying to create my own site for a bit, and couldn't really do what I wanted on my own...). It seemed like a worthwhile investment in getting the business off the ground....
