(Georgia, not Maine) Let's say you were in Augusta for the Masters and wanted to go to the beach. An ocean beach, not a lake- anyone familiar with the S. Carolina beach areas? I'll be alone, so doesn't have to be a family beach, but maybe something with a little life.... I need to put my toes in the ocean, that sort of thing..thanks...  I realize its a little drive, but I'm cool with that...

tybee island would be a good choice - i love it there - and savannah is a cool city if you are looking for a little nightlife/stuff to do.  the food is AMAZING there too.

Hilton Head, SC is great according to my brother in law.  Been to Charleston, SC and it is very cool area also.  it will all be pretty cool along the coast.  Downtown Charleston was a great place to walk around and see some great old buildings also.

If I have the time, Charleston seems like a logical place for sure. Is Charleston right on the beach or is it a lilttle bit of a ride?

I never really heard of Tybee, but that looks nice too, definitely have to investigate that too. I wish I had more time....

Charleston's a port, so it's more upriver.  But fun for walking around town.  Just a bit more of a drive and you're on Sullivan's Island.  Have lunch at Poe's.

Charleston is in the port, but we walked Charleston and had fresh sea food, but then went to Isle of Palms to be on the "beach", which is maybe another 15 minutes from what I remember.

Charleston is nice and has a sense of history.  Isle of Palm is right across the bridge (maybe 20 minutes).  Hilton Head and Kiawah Island are great as well. Lots of options.

X3 for Charleston.  30 minutes out to Kiawah, then you'd also have a chance to play The Ocean Course.

i'd bypass Savannah entirely, i didn't exactly hate it when i was there for 4 months, but i would have greatly preferred Charleston. hit up Charleston for lunch or something then go to the beach. kind of surprised no one has mentioned folly beach (15 minutes away from Charleston). if you just want the beach experience and not the attractions/shops that touristy areas are plagues with then go to folly beach; best surfing on the east coast too.

If you wanted a more relaxing, natural beach I would say Edisto Island is the place, but if you want more action and life then Folly Beach is probably the place to go from Augusta.  Isle of Palms is a favorite of many people (and it is close to Poe's Tavern on Sullivan), but I think the drive is a good bit further from Augusta.

This is just about exactly what I was going to say.  Born and raised in Charleston, SC.
