Swim
Comments: 3-5 footers coming straight in so I ran/waded the first 75 yards then started swimming. The waves and current is the worse I have in a long time. I love waves and never have a fear of any water, however, rounding the buoy and heading south I was thinking I was going to die; I should just pull out and live to fight another day. Then I finally got my rhythm and became one with the water, not clear sailing the remainder, but at least I knew I was going to make it. The final 100 was even hard, I thought the waves would push us in, but it was more of a push pull. Had to keep swimming all the way to shore, couldn’t stand up without getting knocked over. What would you do differently?: Nothing, tough conditions and time wasn't too bad. Transition 1
Comments: Took my time due to the rough swim, had to get oriented, also washed face with fresh water to get the salt out. Also due to 3000 triathletes the transition area was 1/4 mile long so it took a while to get through it. What would you do differently?: Probably could cut a minute out by just focussing a little more. Bike
Comments: First race with my bike shoes and pedals and I beat my pre-race estimated time by 12 minutes, so very happy with the bike, felt good the whole time. The only negative was I lost my water bottle 8 minutes in after my first drink, missed the cage trying to put it away and I wasn’t alone there were hundreds of bottles along the bike route. The sun came out and it got hot on the second half of the ride. Nice scenery through and around Miami and I enjoyed the ride. I smiled a lot and sang some songs so I probably wasn't pushing very hard. I got a little nervous because I didn’t see my daughter on the way back. She started 2 waves behind me and I was concerned for her. What would you do differently?: Carry two bottles in case I lose one. Transition 2
Comments: Very happy with this one, was able to unclip coming in and dismount into a light jog. Used quick laces (yanks) on running shoes for the first time and worked well to get running shoes on and get moving. What would you do differently?: nothing Run
Comments: Boardwalk a little crowded with non-racers, but great encouragement from other racers and volunteers along the whole course. It was very hot by this time in the morning. My wind was fine but the legs were cramping a little and it was mentally tough to push at all. Ran the first mile in about 10 min then consciously slowed down and couldn't get it going again. Ran the first two miles but stopped and restarted frequently the last two miles. Overall it was very hot and I was very tired. I wanted to do better and need to develop a stronger mental toughness at the end, wanted sub 44 minute for this race. I was relieved at about my 3.5 mile mark to see Crystal coming toward me. Just knowing she survived the swim and the bike and that I knew she would finish lifted my spirits. I yelled as loud as I could “hey 2288 Crystal Agnew, you can do it!” and she produced a big smile for dad and added a high five as she went by. What would you do differently?: More water, the heat was hard to deal with, however somewhat expected coming to Miami from Michigan in April. Post race
Warm down: Ice for cramping shoulder and neck. Bowl of fruit and sucked down 3 or 4 waters and a gel. Walked around, found shade, and finally started feeling better about 30 minutes after my finish. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mental toughness, living in Michigan trying to prepare for an April tri. Event comments: Could have used a water station on the bike since I dropped mine, but not common at the shorter sistances. Had a great time and proud of my daughter for completing her first tri! She is planning to start her Oly training plan today, pumped to do it again! Last updated: 2012-10-22 12:00 AM

After reading about various pre-race routines, we decided to get up at 2:00am for breakfast, which we did, had a Shaklee 180 meal replacement shake and toast with peanut butter. Went right back to bed and got up at 5: to head over to south beach to get set up for the race.
We(my daughter Crystal's first tri) walked up the beach and back with a little jogging for 20 minutes. Listened to the instructions and national anthem. As the anthem began, the Sun came up over the ocean through a small cloud. It was like a spiritual moment until the singer said "kick #ss"! Had a good laugh and jumped in the water for a 5 minute warmup swim.
