Subject: First day of tri training starts tomorrow
Hey, just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a sophomore at a college in upstate New York, and I'm about to start training for my first triathlon (probably a sprint, we'll see what happens), which will take place next summer, or maybe earlier dpeending on how things go. I've always been in good shape and over the course of my workouts I've drifted more and more towards cross training - swimming, biking, running, and strength (sound familiar?). Anyways, at a certain point if thought to myself "I'm pretty much doing triathlon training already, I might as well make it official." And I feel a lot more motivated now, considering I now have a goal behind working out, besides pure fitness. So there you have it. Tomorrow I start my training program. I still need to figure out which bike I will use at school (buy an entry level bike, keep my old, beat up road bike, etc.)

Anyways, I'm new to the sport, excited about my new goal, and I would love any advice anyone has about bikes, races, training, anything (post or email me at [email protected])

Thanks
Tom

Welcome to the sport! It sounds like you've already got a good base to build on, now you just find a training schedule on BT and start to follow it. Good Luck.

Welcome and good luck. I have recently started a training program as well, my first tri should be next summer some time.

This is a great site and there will be plenty of people willing to help you and motivate you. Take the advise of the earlier thread and look into a BT training program. It has done a world of good for me. I started in May, for a whole season of triathlons next spring and summer, and the training has me excited about fitness again!
Welcome aboard!

The first day went okay, I'm using the beginner sprint 3x program. I do swim/run instead of swim bike because I don't have a bike here (i'm away from home) and the gym here closed. It actually wasn't as big of a milestone as it might seem, cuz I've been working out in triathlon-ish fashion for a few months now. The only new thing is the regular swimming, which I've only done about a week of.

Right now I'm just following the workouts and trying to figure out my bike dilemma. I get home for a week and then it's off to school, so I need to decide if I should use my dad's old, old, mothballed roadbike, or look into buying a cheap, newer bike, or just doing stuff on a lifecycle for this first 3-4 months. I don't know. Another factor is that I go to school in upstate new york, which equals SNOW. If i'm going to ride there I need a bike that won't fall apart in a snowy environment. Any advice is appreciated.

and I also am pretty sure I have awful swimming form. I do 500 yds. in about 11 minutes, but I couldn't keep that up for more than 1000 yds without dying and I get through it pretty much by brute force, as opposed to efficient form. Time to start making friends on the school swim team to get some pointers...

I have a bike issue as well. I use the LifeCycle "hill" program currently. You could mix it up and put in some "random" rides, but try to keep the stting on something other than "flat", unless you are going to do triathlons in a flat environment. All the wisdom would point you in the direction of actual road miles, but do the best you can with what you have to work with. I imagine your first race will be a few months away, so get you legs ready for the real deal on a LifeCycle, not Dad's 25 year old Beach Comber. The LifeCycle will get you used to "spinning" with good form too. I "spin" at around 115~120rpm which is nothing like you would do on a reg bike (95~100rpm), but it over emphasizes the form. This is just my $.02 and it works for me.

yeah that was pretty much my plan, i mean what else am I gonna do? I won't be racing until next spring/summer anyways, so I've got plenty of time (I picked about the worst time to get into this, just too late to race this summer - I could train up for a triathon 2-3 times over before next summer). Maybe i'll use the lifecycle until around the new year and try to buy a bike at the post Christmas, "2007 clearance" type sales. Thanks for the advice.
